trug ihm die Sache contradictorisch mit seinen Einwendungen vor. So ging wol manches Detail verloren, aber ich glaube ihn doch mit den Hauptzügen vertraut gemacht zu haben. Das Oekonomische versteht er freilich absolut nicht, und da ist der Leuchtkern des Ganzen. Dennoch glaube ich auch Leven gewonnen zu haben, soweit eine solche schwerflüssige Natur für eine Sache der Begeisterung gewonnen werden kann. Ich reiste dann zurück.   In Wien waren am Tag vor Erew Roschhaschonoh die Gemeinderathswahlen. Alle Mandate fielen den Antisemiten zu. Die Stimmung ist eine verzweifelte unter den Juden. Die Christen sind schwer verhetzt. Laut ist die Bewegung eigentlich nicht. Für mich an den Lärm von Pariser Bewegungen Gewöhnten ist sie sogar viel zu still. Ich finde diese Ruhe

The movement is not really a noisy one. For me, who am used to the clamor of popular agitation in Paris, things are even much too quiet. I find this calm more sinister.

והרציתי באוזניו את העניין בצורה של תשובות על השגותיו.

בצורה זו אמנם אבדו כמה פרטים, אבל נראה לי שהבהרתי לו את הקווים העיקריים. את הצד הכלכלי אין הוא מבין כלל וכלל, והרי כאן טמון עיקרו של העניין.

עם זאת, דומה שרכשתי לי גם את לֶוֶן, עד כמה שאפשר לרכוש טיפוס מאופק כל־כך לעניין הדורש התלהבות.

בווינה נערכו ביום שלפני ערב ראש השנה [במקור: Erew Roschhaschonoh] הבחירות למועצת העיר. כל המנדטים נפלו בחלקם של האנטישמים. האווירה בקרב היהודים היא אווירה של ייאוש. הנוצרים מוסתים מאוד.

התנועה בעצם איננה קולנית. לי, שאני מורגל לרעש של התנועות הפאריסאיות, היא אף שקטה מדי. השקט הזה מטיל אימה אף יותר.
