Die Art, wie Sie mir vor= gestern geantwortet haben, wird meine Absicht wahrscheinlich früher zur Reife bringen. Wenn Sie austreten, werden in der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] jedenfalls andere Verhältnisse eintreten. Die dürften mir kaum mehr zu= sagen. Da ziehe ich es vor, früher zu gehen.“ Er sagte: „Ich versichere Sie, dass davon noch gar keine Rede ist. Ich möchte mich gern zurückziehen, weil ich müde  

We were on the Parkring. On the staircase I had said to Bacher when he was starting to talk about it: “Quand on est mort, c'est pour longtemps—et quand on parle de choses sérieuses, c'est aussi pour longtemps [When one is dead, it is for a long time; and when one talks about serious matters, it is also for along time].”

 

When we had arrived at the Ring, I started in. I had learned the opening by heart, so as not to falter.

 

‘For some time I have harbored the idea of striking out on my own. Every little clerk wants to become a manager some day. The way you replied to me the day before yesterday will probably make my intention mature earlier. If you retire, the situation at the N. Fr. Pr. will in any case become different. That situation will hardly be to my taste any more. So I prefer leaving before that.”

 

He said: ‘‘I assure you that all this is still highly premature. I should very much like to retire, because I am tired and have worked long enough.

היינו בפּארקרינג. בעודנו על המדרגות אמרתי לבּאכֶר, כשרצה לפתוח בשיחה:

("כשמתים, זה לאורך זמן, וכשמדברים על דברים רציניים – גם זה לאורך זמן").

כשהגענו אל הָרינג התחלתי לדבר. את התחלת דברַי למדתי בעל־פה, כדי לא לגמגם: 

"זה זמן מה אני נושא את המחשבה להיעשות עצמאי. כל עוזר רוצה להיות בעל עסק ביום מן הימים. האופן שבו ענית לי שלשום יכול להקדים ולהבשיל את כוונתי. אם תפרוש, מן הסתם ישתררו תנאים שונים ב־.N.Fr.Pr ואלה בוודאי לא יהיו לרוחי. אני מעדיף אפוא להקדים ולפרוש".

הוא אמר: "אני מבטיח לך שעדיין לא מדובר בזה כלל וכלל. ברצון הייתי פורש, כי אני עייף וכבר עמלתי די והותר.
