Oder Sie geben mir eine Sonntagsnummer, wo auf der ersten Seite „Die Lösung der Judenfrage von Dr. Theodor Herzl“ erscheint. Ich mache aus dem Entwurf einen Extract, der 6 oder 9 Spalten füllt. Dann erscheinen die Details, Fragen u. Antworten — denn das ganze Judenthum fordere ich zur Mitarbeit auf u. es wird mitarbeiten — in einer neuen Rubrik „Die Judenfrage“, die ich redigire. Nie hat eine Zeitung etwas Interessanteres enthalten. Ich allein trage die Verantwortung. Sie können vor meinen Entwurf eine Reservation der Zeitung hinstellen. Er: Nein, das wäre eine Feigheit. Wenn wir es bringen, sind wir mit Ihnen soli= darisch. Ihr Gedanke ist eine fürchterliche Mitrailleuse, die aber auch nach hinten losgehen kann. Ich: Furchtsam darf man nicht sein. Jeder

I: “It could take two forms. Either you found a smaller paper for me in addition to the Neue Freie Presse, in which I may elaborate on my idea. Or you give me a Sunday edition with ‘The Solution of the Jewish Question,’ by Dr. Theodor Herzl, on the front page. I shall draw excerpts from my outline which will fill six or nine columns. Then the details, questions and answers— for I shall invite all of Jewry to contribute, and it will do so— will appear in a new column, ‘The Jewish Question,’ which I shall edit.

 

“Never has a paper contained anything more interesting. The responsibility will be mine alone. You can preface my outline with a disclaimer on the part of the paper.”

 

He: “No, that would be cowardly. If we publish it, we shall accept joint responsibility with you. Your idea is a powerful machine gun, but it could also backfire.”

 

I: “One mustn’t be timid. 

אני: יש דרכים. או שאתם מייסדים בשבילי לצד .N.Fr.Pr עיתון קטן יותר, ששם אני יכול לדון ברעיון בהרחבה, או שאתם מקצים לי גיליון של יום א׳, ובעמוד הראשון יופיע "פתרון שאלת־היהודים מאת ד״ר תיאודור הרצל". אחבר מן הטיוטה שבידי תמצית שתשתרע על פני ששה עד תשעה טורים. אחר־כך יבואו הפרטים, שאלות ותשובות במדור חדש שאערוך ושמו יהיה "שאלת־היהודים", שהרי אני קורא לכל היהודים להשתתף בעניין, והם יעשו זאת.

מעולם לא היה בעיתון דבר מעניין יותר. רק אני נושא באחריות. תוכלו להדפיס הסתייגות של העיתון מעל לחיבור שלי.
