Grafen Badeni die (xx) „idée maitresse“ seiner Regierungszeit bringen! Schon scheint Badeni eine gute Meinung von mir zu haben, wie ich aus den An= deutungen Kozmians, der ein feiner alter Mann ist, herausfühle. Badeni, sagt mir Kozmian, will durchaus nicht gegen die Liberalen regieren, wenn er nicht gezwungen ist (ich verstehe: wenn sie sich ihm fügen) aber man kann nicht wissen. „II ne s’en ira pas!“ sagte Kozmian schliesslich. Ich antwortete: „Ich könnte ja mit dem Grafen gehen, so lange es mit meinen Ueberzeugungen verträglich ist — et puis je m’en irais.“ Wir kamen überein, dass ich den Antrag den Herausgebern Bacher u. Benedict noch heute — tecto et ficto nomine bekanntgebe. Denn ich will schicklicherweise nicht mit dem fait accompli vor sie hintreten. Doch erklärte ich meinen beiden Antragstellern, dass ich diese Verständigung nicht vornehme, um für mich compensatorische Geldvortheile

Badeni already seems to have a high opinion of me, as I can tell from the hints dropped by Kozmian, a fine old man.

 

According to Kozmian, Badeni’s government by no means wants to be anti-Liberal if it is not forced to be (I take this to mean: if they go along with him), but one never knows. Il ne s’en ira pas [he won’t abandon them], Kozmian said finally.

 

I answered: “I could go along with the Count as long as it is compatible with my convictions—et puis, je m’en irais [and then I would part company with him].”

 

We agreed that I should inform the publishers Bacher and Benedikt of the offer the very same day—tecto et ficto nomine [under a hidden and disguised name]. For, out of a sense of propriety I do not want to confront them with a fait accompli. But I explained to the two people who had made me the offer that I was not making this notification in order to get any compensatory financial advantages for myself.

לבּאדֶני את ה־idée maîtresse (הרעיון המרכזי) של תקופת שלטונו!

מן הסתם כבר יש לבּאדֶני דעה טובה עלי, כפי שאני חש מרמזיו של קוֹזמיאן, שהוא זקן טוב ונעים.

בּאדֶני, אומר לי קוֹזמיאן, איננו מתכוון לעמוד בראשות ממשלה נגד הליברלים אם לא ייאלץ לעשות כן (אני מבין זאת: אם הם יקבלו על עצמם את הדין), אבל אין לדעת.

Il ne s'en ira pas  (הוא לא ייטוש את תפקידו), אמר קוֹזמיאן לבסוף.

עניתי: הרי אוכל ללכת עם הגראף כל עוד הדבר מתיישב עם דעותי, et puis je m'en irai (ואחר כך אסתלק לי).

הסכמנו שאמסור למו״לים בּאכֶר ובֶּנֶדיקט עוד היום על ההצעה tecto et ficto nomine (בשם חסוי ובדוי). שהרי למען ההגינות אין ברצוני לבוא לפניהם עם fait accompli (עובדה מוגמרת). ואולם הסברתי לשני בעלי ההצעה שההודעה הזאת אין כוונתה להשיג יתרונות כספיים כלשהם, בחינת פיצוי לעצמי.
