Ueber das regierende Lumpen= gesindel in u. um Yildiz Kiosk sprach Strauss in der schärfsten Weise. Alle Macht in Sultans Faust vereinigt. Die Minister Idioten u. feige käufliche Bursche. Der Sultan pfeife auf die ganze Türkei. Mit humanity u. dgl. sei bei ihm gar nichts auszurichten. Ja, wenn er Geld oder Vortheile andrer Art sehen könnte, wäre er vielleicht zu gewinnen. Aber jedes Gespräch oder Verhandeln mit Anderen sei werthlos. Mit dem Sultan oder gar nicht. Ich erzählte ihm von der Aussicht, die sich mir vor 14 Tagen eröffnete u. leider sans suite blieb. Er drang heftig in mich, ihm den Namen meines Unter= händlers zu nennen. Ich schwieg beharrlich u. lieferte ihm den Beweis meiner Discre=

 Strauss sharply denounced the riffraff in power in and around Yildiz Kiosk. All the power was united in the Sultan’s fist. The ministers were idiots and cowardly, corrupt characters. 

 

The Sultan didn’t give a hoot for the whole of Turkey. With talk about humanity and the like nothing whatever could be accomplished with him. Oh yes, if he could see money or benefits of some other kind, he might perhaps be won over. But any conversation or negotiation with others was worthless. With the Sultan, or not at all.

 

I told him about the prospect which had opened up to me two weeks ago, but unfortunately remained sans suite [unconcluded].

 

He pressed me hard to give him the name of my intermediary. I kept stubbornly silent and thus gave him some proof of my discretion.

על חבורת הנוכלים המושלת ביילדיז־קיוסק דיבר שטראוס באורח חריף ביותר. כל הכוח מתרכז באגרופו של הסולטאן. השרים הם אידיוטים, מוגי־לב ומושחתים. 

הסולטאן מצפצף על טורקיה כולה. במלים כמו humanity וכיוצא באלה אי־אפשר לפעול אצלו. כן, אם יוכל לראות כסף או יתרונות מסוג אחר, אולי אפשר יהיה לרכוש אותו. ואולם כל שיחה או משא ומתן עם אחרים היא חסרת־ערך. או עם הסולטאן או בכלל לא.

סיפרתי לו על הסיכוי שנפתח לי לפני שבועיים ושנותר למרבה הצער sans suite (בלי המשך).

הוא הפציר בי מאוד לנקוב בשמו של המתווך שלי. החשיתי בעקשנות והוכחתי לו את הדיסקרטיות שלי.
