im Vorübergehen bemerkte. Der ver= steht die Sache ganz! Von Kozmian  hörte ich übrigens auch, dass Benedikt  wüthend sei. Kozmian hat es (xx) von einem  Dritten.   Nachmittags als ich in der Redaction war,  hatte Benedikt wieder eine Unterredung mit diesem  Dritten. Ich hörte dann Abends von Kozmian  als wir bei Baron Bourgoing zusammenkamen, dass die Herausgeber jetzt Angst (xx) vor meiner Concurrenz haben. Sie ahnen offenbar, dass  ich mich in der inneren östreichischen Politik nicht zu weit von ihrem Standpunkt  entfernen werde. Ich stellte in der Conferenz bei Bourgoing  den ganzen Plan des Blattes fest. Alle alten  Mitarbeiter der Presse behielt ich. Zwei sind  darunter, die mich in früherer Zeit niedrig  angegriffen hatten. Ich sagte: „je ne peux  pas les renvoyer — ce sont mes ennemis  personnels.“ Man lachte. Im Grunde hatte ich aber doch den ganzen  Abend über Sehnsucht, bei der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] zu

I noticed this when I passed him. He understands the matter completely! Kozmian also told me that Benedikt was furious. Kozmian has this from a third party.

 

In the afternoon, when I was in the office, Benedikt again had an interview with this third party. In the evening, when Kozmian and I met at the house of Baron Bourgoing, he told me that my superiors are now afraid of my competition. They evidently suspect that in domestic Austrian politics I shall not deviate too far from their point of view.

 

In the conference at Bourgoing’s house I developed the whole plan of the newspaper! I was going to retain all the old staff members of the Presse. Among them are two who made base attacks on me in earlier times, I said, “Je ne peux pas les renvoyer—ce sont mes ennemis personnels [I cannot dismiss them, they are my personal enemies].” They laughed.

 

But, at bottom, all evening I longed to remain with the Neue Freie Presse. 

 כפי שהבחנתי כשעברתי על ידו! הוא מבין את העניין בשלמותו. גם מקוֹזמיאן בעצם שמעתי שבֶּנֶדיקט זועם. קוֹזמיאן שמע זאת מפי שלישי.

אחר־הצהריים, כשהייתי במערכת, שוב שוחח בֶּנֶדיקט עם אותו שלישי. אחר־כך שמעתי בערב מפי קוֹזמיאן, כשנפגשנו אצל בּוּרגוֹאן, שהמו״לים חוששים עכשיו מפני התחרות שלי. הם מרגישים כנראה שבענייני מדיניות הפנים האוסטרית לא ארחיק מדי מן העמדה שלהם.

בישיבה אצל בּוּרגוֹאן פרסתי את כל התוכנית של העיתון. אשמור על כל הכַּתָבים של ה־Presse. יש בהם שניים שבעבר תקפו אותי בנבזות. אמרתי: 

"Je ne peux pas les renvoyer - ce sont mes ennemis personnels" (״אינני יכול לפטר אותם — הם אויבַי האישיים"). צחקו.

למעשה, הרגשתי כל הערב כמיהה להישאר ב־.N.Fr.Pr.
