Sollte wider Erwarten doch noch meine Rückkehr zur N[euen] Fr [eien] Pr[esse] erfolgen, so habe ich mit diesen Rathschlägen die Chance bezahlt, die dieser Antrag war. 31 October [1895]. Kozmian sollte mir heute ein Wort schicken, was Benedikt gestern dem Zwischenträger über mich gesagt habe. Bis elf Uhr habe ich noch nichts erhalten. Es ist möglich, dass dieses Ausbleiben der Nachricht auf eine Intrigue zurückzuführen ist. Ich werde dahinter kommen. Sollte man in der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] etwas anzetteln, um mein Engagement zu verhindern, so wird das für der mich der casus belli sein.

An ingredient in this is obviously my cowardice in the face of the qu’en dira-t-on [what will people say], the turned-up noses of those who would probably like to change places with me and will vent their envy in the form of disparagement.

 

Yet in the conference I gave the best suggestions for the production of a good, lively paper. If, contrary to expectations, I should return to the fold of the Neue Freie Presse, these suggestions will have been my payment for the opportunity which this offer has been.

Kozmian was supposed to send me word today on what Benedikt yesterday told the go-between about me.

 

By eleven o’clock I had not received anything. It is possible that the delay of this message is due to some intrigue. I shall get to the bottom of this. If the Neue Freie Presse hatches some plot to prevent my being hired, this will be the casus belli [cause for war] for me.

אף־על־פי־כן העליתי בישיבה את מיטב העצות להתקנתו של עיתון רענן וטוב. והיה אם בניגוד לציפיות אשוב ל־.N.Fr.Pr, הרי העצות הללו הן בבחינת תשלום על הסיכוי שהיה טמון בהצעה הזאת.
