Stunde, allein ich bin den ganzen Tag über vollauf in Anspruch genommen.     Ich war natürlich pünktlich wie zum ersten= mal da u. wurde mit demselben Ceremo= niell der Liebenswürdigkeit von Koerber empfangen. Er begann, nachdem ich auf dem Sofa Platz genommen u. meine Cigarre angezündet hatte, mit Seufzern über die Wiener Frage. Er habe alles Mögliche in der Wiener Wahlreformfrage gethan, er sei wahr= lich kein Antisemit u. werde nun durch die Liberalen so dargestellt (Heute steht ein Artikel über diese Sache vom Gemeinderäthchen Stern in der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse].) Dann ging er zu meiner Sache über. Er hatte den Act geholt u. las mir vor. Die Regierung könne natürlich nicht anders als nach dem Gesetz vorgehen, aber mein Vorschlag enthalte eine acceptable Lösung u. man wolle

Naturally I was there punctually, as I had been the first time, and was received by Koerber with the same amiable ceremoniousness. After I had been seated on the sofa and had lit my cigar, he began by sighing over the Vienna question. He said he had done all he could in the way of an electoral reform for Vienna; he was truly no anti-Semite, but was now being made out one by the Liberals. Then he turned to my subject. He had fetched the file and read to me. Naturally the government could do nothing else but proceed according to the law; but my proposal contained an acceptable solution, and they wanted to go along with it by “looking the other way."

הגעתי כמובן בשעה היעודה, כמו בפעם הראשונה, וכמו אז כך גם עתה, קיבל אותי קֶרבֶּר באותם גינונים של חביבות. לאחר שהתיישבתי על הספה והדלקתי את הסיגר שלי, הוא פתח באנחות על שאלת וינה. הוא עשה כל מה שאפשר בשאלת הרפורמה של שיטת הבחירות בווינה; הרי באמת אין הוא אנטישמי, ורק הליברלים מציגים אותו בתור שכזה (היום מופיע מאמר בעניין הזה ב־.N.Fr.Pr מאת חבר מועצת העירייה, לא עלינו, שטרן).

אחר־כך החל לדבר על העניין שלי. הוא נטל את התיק וקרא בקול. הממשלה, כמובן, אינה יכולה אלא לפעול על־פי החוק, ואולם בהצעתי יש משום פתרון שאפשר לקבלו ומוכנים להסכים לזה מתוך "העלמת עין".
