Der vornehme Preusse sei überhaupt kein Antisemit, der fühle sich bürgerlichen Christen wie Juden gleich überlegen. Wolff merkt also nicht, dass die Vornehmen, die er bewundert, nur die eine Verachtung durch die andere ersetzen. Ihm ist es schon genug, mit bürgerlichen Christen in einen Sack geworfen, verachtet zu werden. Er findet es selbstverständlich, dass er nicht Offizier wird, obwol er das beste Offiziers examen machte. Dined yesterday with little Wolff. He has been called up for military drill. I listened once again to his tales of the Dragoon-Guards. He doesn't consider anti-Semitism so bad. The upper-class Prussians, he says, are not anti-Semites at all; they feel just as superior to the middle-class Gentiles as they do to the Jews. Thus Wolff does not notice that the upper-class people he admires only substitute one kind of contempt for another. He is satisfied to be thrown in the same pot with the middle-class Gentiles and to be despised along with them.

 

He finds it quite natural that he will not get an officer’s commission although he got the highest marks on the examinations.

 

By the way, if there is one thing I should like to be, it is a member of the old Prussian nobility.

אתמול סעדתי עם ווֹלף הקטן. הוא נקרא לאימוני נשק. שוב הקשבתי לסיפורים על פרשי־משמר. הוא סבור שהאנטישמיות אינה נוראה כל־כך. הפרוסי האציל איננו אנטישמי כלל וכלל, הוא מרגיש נעלה על הבורגני הנוצרי ועל היהודי במידה שווה. ווֹלף אינו מבחין אפוא שהאצילים הנערצים עליו ממירים בוז בבוז. די לו להתבזות בחברתם של בורגנים נוצרים.

ברור לו שלא יהיה קצין, אף־על־פי שעמד בהצטיינות במבחני הקצונה.

בעצם, לו רציתי להיות מישהו אחר, הייתי בוחר להיות אציל פרוסי מן האצולה הישנה.
