ausdrücklich für meinen „Brief (xx) vom 5 März“ gedankt hatte. Zufällig hatte ich Morgens im Hôtel um mich auf die Unterredung vorzu= bereiten, besagten Brief vom 5 März nachgelesen, so dass ich wusste, wovon er sprach. Ich fügte unter den Conside= Rationen, die mir den jetzigen Moment für eine Action in Const[antinopel] geeignet erscheinen liessen, auch die Pariser Ausstellung u. die daraus folgende Friedensliebe Frankreichs an. Ich hatte in gedrängter Kürze das Situationsbild entworfen, worauf der G[roß]h[erzo]g das Wort nahm: Die Sache sei nämlich anders. Gerade der südafrikanische Krieg sei in seinem jetzigen Zustande eine Gefahr für Deutschland ja für den Weltfrieden. Es könne der Augenblick kommen, wo England einsähe, dass es mit den Buren nicht fertig werden könne. Dann werde man sich vielleicht

במקרה חזרתי וקראתי בבוקר במלון בנוסח המכתב כדי להתכונן לשיחה וידעתי אפוא על מה הוא שח. לשיקולים שהבאתי כדי לנמק מדוע נראה לי הרגע הזה כרגע המתאים לפעולה בקושטא, הוספתי את התערוכה [העולמית] בפאריס ואת שאיפתה של צרפת לשלום הנובעת מכך.

בתכלית הקיצור התוויתי את קווי התמונה ובעקבות זה פתח הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג ואמר: 

העניין שונה, בעצם. המלחמה בדרום־אפריקה, על־פי מצבה היום, יש בה דווקא משום סכנה לגרמניה ולשלום העולם בכלל. יכול להיות שברגע מסוים תגיע אנגליה למסקנה שאיננה יכולה לגבור על הבּוּרים.
