Oder sich selbst ein Vaterland zu machen, dachte ich mir im Stillen. Feldmann sagte: „Es ist nicht gut, dass die Juden dieses starke Nationalgefühl in sich entwickeln. Das  wird die Verfolgungen nur verstärken.“ 7  Juli [1895] Warum hat  Hirsch mir plötzlich wieder geschrieben? Ich habe dafür zwei Erklärungen. Entweder hat ihm Fürth in einem Briefe beiläufig erwähnt, dass ich eine Denkschrift für den Kaiser verfasse. Oder — und das ist mir wahrscheinlicher — mein letzter Brief, worin ich schrieb: „Rothschild mitreissen oder niederreissen — und dann hinüber!“ hat ihn stark frappirt. Er gab seinem Sekretär Auftrag, mir genau nach vierzehn Tagen zu schreiben — damit die Sache nicht pressant aussehe. Thatsächlich beschäftige ich ihn sehr. Und wenn er ein bischen Witterung hat, muss er ja errathen, was ich ihm bringe. Wir zwei sind ja Naturen, die am Beginn neuer Zeiten auftauchen — er der Geldcondottiere

Fürth said: “It is not good for the Jews to develop such a strong nationalist feeling within themselves. This will only intensify the persecutions.”

Why has Hirsch suddenly written me again? I have two explanations for it.

 

Either Fürth casually mentioned in a letter to him that I was preparing a memorandum for the Kaiser.

 

Or—and this seems more likely to me—my last letter, in which I wrote “Pull Rothschild with us or pull him down—and then over and across!” really struck home.

 

He instructed his secretary to write me after exactly two weeks —so that the matter would not appear urgent. Actually, I have been much on his mind.

 

And if he has any nose for such things he must certainly sense what I am bringing him.

 

After all, we two are natures such as emerge at the beginning of a new era—he is the condottiere of money, I am the condottiere of the intellect.

מה פתאום כתב לי הירש שוב? יש לי שני הסברים לכך:

או שפירְט הזכיר דרך אגב באחד ממכתביו שאני מנסח תזכיר לקיסר. או — וזה נראה לי סביר יותר — שהדהים אותו המכתב האחרון שלי, שבו כתבתי: "למשוך אתנו את רוטשילד או להרוס אותו, ואחר־כך — הלאה לְשָם!"

הוא הורה למזכירו להשיב בדיוק אחרי שבועיים, כדי שהדבר לא ייראה דחוף. בעצם אני מעסיק אותו מאוד.

ואם יש לו קצת חוש ריח, הוא ינחש מה אני מבשל בשבילו.

הלוא שנינו טיפוסים מן הסוג המתגלה בראשיתם של זמנים חדשים: הוא condottiere של הכסף ואני condottiere של הרוח.
