Nuri passed the hardest judgment on him, at first in guarded words. “Appelons-le le défunt [Let us call him the deceased].” Newlinski, he said, had cheated me, had never brought my proposals to the attention of those in authority, but, on the contrary, had offered to spy on us. When the conversation grew more intimate—along about the champagne—Nuri said:

The conversation got very intimate. ("הבה נקרא לילד בשמו, הוא היה חלאת אדם הנֶוולינסקי הזה").

השיחה הפכה אינטימית מאוד. כשראה נוּרי שאני מסתובב סחור־סחור מסביב לעניין, הקל עלי ודיבר גלויות, ישר לעניין, בציניות:

"יש אנשים שרוצים להרוויח. אני ארכיב בשבילך קוֹנסוֹרציוּם, שיפעל למען העניין ביילדיז. השער־העליון איננו נחשב כלל. האחד צריך לקבל סכום כזה והשני סכום כזה.
