Paris 19 VI [1899]        Ganz vertraulich!   Excellenz, es wird (xx) gut sein, wenn Sie mich au courant Ihrer Adresse von jetzt bis Anfang Juli halten, da ich wahrscheinlich zwischen 2 u 4 Juli beim Onkel sein werde u. da vielleicht Manches richten könnte. Heute habe ich eine Bitte. Man meldet mir, dass Witte der in der Bildung begriffenen zionistischen Bank (sie heisst the Jewish Colonial Trust (Jüdische Colonialbank) in London) nicht sehr freundlich ge= sinnt sei. Bitte schreiben Sie ihm zwei Worte der Aufklärung: es handle sich um eine durchaus loyale Unternehmung die zur Ausführung der gewiss löblichen Aufgaben der jüdischen Colonisation bestimmt sei. Er möge daher der Subscription in Russland keine Hinder= nisse bereiten. Er möge nur eine wohlwollende Passivität beobachten. Eine Unterstützung oder Leistung brauche ich von ihm nicht. Ich brauche Ihnen wol nicht erst zu sagen, dass

It will be well if you keep me au courant [informed] regarding your address from now till the beginning of July, since I shall probably be with Uncle between the 2nd and the 4th of July and might be able to arrange a number of things there.

 

I have a request to make today. I have been informed that Witte is not very favorably disposed toward the Zionist Bank which is in process of formation (it is called The Jewish Colonial Trust [Jewish Colonial Bank], London). Please write him a few words of explanation, saying that it is a matter of a perfectly loyal enterprise, one designed to carry out the surely praiseworthy tasks of Jewish colonization. Therefore he should put no obstacles in the path of the subscription in Russia, but only maintain a benevolent inactivity. I don’t require any support or money from him. I probably don’t need to tell you that I have no personal and material interests whatever in this Bank.

טוב היה לוּ הודעת לי מה תהיה כתובתך מעתה ועד תחילת יולי, כי בין 2 ביולי ל־4 ביולי אהיה כנראה אצל הדוד [הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג] ואולי אוכל לפעול שם בעניין זה או אחר.

היום יש לי בקשה אליך. מודיעים לי שוויטֶה איננו רואה בעין יפה את הבנק הציוני הנמצא בהליכי ייסוּד בלונדון (שמו The Jewish Colonial Trust Jüdische Colonialbank).

אנא כתוב לו כמה מילות הבהרה: מדובר במפעל לויאלי בהחלט שנועד לביצוע מטרות ההתיישבות היהודית, שהן בלי ספק ראויות לשבח. אל יעמיד אפוא מכשולים להחתמה ברוסיה. ינקוט־נא עמדה אוהדת של שב־ואל־תעשה. תמיכה או פעולה מצדו אינן נחוצות לי. למותר לומר לך שאין לי כל אינטרסים אישיים או חומריים בבנק הזה.
