Mein Gedanke dabei: dass ich das Blatt dann für meine Judensache habe, wenn ich nicht vorher schon den Grafen Badeni für meine Idee gewinnen konnte — oder bei den grossen Juden die nöthige Autorität erlangt hätte. Aber darauf will der Pressleiter Hofrath Freiberg nicht eingehen. Er reclamirt das Blatt wenn’s schlecht geht für die Regierung. Das hätte auch den Uebelstand, dass ich vom Pressbureau abhängig werde. Ich will aber nur einzig u. allein mit Badeni, nicht mit seinen Hof= räthen gehen. Die persönliche Beziehung zu Badeni — d. h. ihr Werth für die Judensache — ist’s ja, warum ich über= haupt das Regierungsblatt führen will. Das habe ich auch Kozmian geantwortet. Wenn ich [nicht] im Fall des Gelingens immer direct mit Badeni verkehren — u. im Fall des Misslingens

What I had in mind was that I would then have the paper for my Jewish cause unless I had previously succeeded in winning over Count Badeni for my idea—or if I had attained the requisite authority with the big Jews.

 

But the Press Chief, Privy Councillor Freiberg, won’t go along with this. If the paper goes badly, he will claim it for the government.

 

This would have the additional drawback that I would be dependent on the Press Bureau. But I wish to work with Badeni exclusively, not with his privy councillors. After all, the personal contact with Badeni—i.e., its value to the Jewish cause —is the very reason why I wanted to run the government paper in the first place.

 

This is what I replied to Kozmian too. If I cannot always deal directly with Badeni if the paper is successful, and keep it for myself if it is unsuccessful, I won’t have any part of it.

אם חברת העיתונים לא תרצה עוד לנהל אותו.

כוונתי בזה היא שאם לא יעלה בידי לרכוש עוד קודם לכן את הגראף בּאדֶני לרעיון, ולחילופין, אם לא אזכה במידת הסמכות הנחוצה בקרב היהודים הגדולים, יעמוד אז לרשותי העיתון בשביל עניין־היהודים שלי.

אלא שלעניין זה אין מנהל לשכת העיתונות, ההוֹפראט פרייבֶּרג, מוכן להסכים. אם לא יעלה העיתון יפה, ידרוש אותו בחזרה בשביל הממשלה.

יהיה בכך עוד חיסרון, שאהיה תלוי בלשכת העיתונות. והרי אני רוצה לפעול בעצמי ולבדי עם בּאדֶני, ולא עם יועציו. הקשר האישי עם בּאדֶני — כלומר ערכו לעניין־היהודים — הלוא הוא הסיבה שבגללה אני רוצה בכלל לנהל את עיתון הממשלה. 

זאת אמרתי גם לקוֹזמיאן. אם לא אוכל להיות בקשר ישיר עם בּאדֶני במקרה שהעניין יצלח, ולא אוכל לאמץ את העיתון לעצמי במקרה של כישלון — אין טעם שאכנס לעניין.
