Er nickte. „Ja, für solche Dinge lässt er sich interessiren. Ich will es thun.“ Dann sprachen wir noch ein bischen hin u. her. Ueber die Geographie Pa= lästinas zeigte er sich nicht ganz infor= mirt, denn als ich von der Mittel= meer=Persischen Golf=Bahn sprach, sagte er: „Ja, von Arabien weiss man über= haupt nicht viel.“ Ich glaube, er ver= wechselte Syrien mit Arabien, doch Acceptirte ich courmässig diese fürst= liche Geographie. Er verabschiedete mich liebenswürdig, nachdem uns der Stoff ausgegangen war.   13 August [1899] Basel Im Hotel trois rois die Getreuen versammelt. Wolffsohn, die Gottheils aus New York u.s.w.

He nodded: “Yes, he can be interested in things like that. I will do it.“

 

After that we spoke about this and that for a little while. He showed himself not very well informed about the geography of Palestine, for when I spoke about the Mediterranean-Persian Gulf railroad, he said: “Well, not much is known about Arabia at all.“ 

 

I think he confused Syria with Arabia, but, court-like, I accepted this princely geography.

 

He dismissed me amiably after we had run out of things to talk about.

 

August 13, Basel

הוא הִנהן. "כן, בדברים כאלה אפשר לעניין אותו. אעשה זאת".

עוד דיברנו קצת כהנה וכהנה. בגאוגרפיה של ארץ־ישראל לא התמצא די הצורך, כי בדברי על מסילת הברזל מהים התיכון למפרץ הפרסי, אמר: "כן, על עֲרָב אין יודעים הרבה בדרך כלל". 

דומני שהחליף בין סוריה לעֲרָב, ואולם נעניתי, כיאה לנימוסי־חצר, לגאוגרפיה הנסיכותית הזאת.

הוא נפטר ממני בחביבות, אחרי שאזלו נושאי השיחה.

13 באוגוסט [1899] בבאזל
