Town Hall zur Conferenz der English Zionist Federation. Ich sprach zu Gunsten der Federation, die vom Eastend=Russenthum angefeindet wird. Bentwich erklärte ich, es müsse Donnerstag 29 Juni unter allen Umständen zum Allotment geschritten werden. Er machte alle möglichen Schwierig= keiten, dennoch setzte ich es durch. Diese Schwierigkeiten sind heute schon überwunden u. darum vergessen. Sie sahen gross aus am 27 Juni [1899] In einem Augenblick verlangte Bentwich, der aus mir unerfindlichen Gründen bâtons dans les roues stemmt, die Einwilligung aller auswärtigen Directoren zu einer Reso= lutionsänderung, von der er das Allotment abhängig machte. (xx) Er wollte dadurch offen= bar eine Verschleppung, während welcher ich wegfahren müsste. Ich überwand das durch grosse Depeschen, die 17 £ kosteten, u. am anderen Morgen waren sämmtliche Ein= willigungen zum Allotment da. Es waren 57,000 £ baar in London angezahlt auf mehr als 250,000 Shares (das Minimum) aber erst 228,000 Shares registrirt. Ich  

Then to St. Martin’s Town Hall for a conference of the English Zionist Federation. I spoke in support of the Federation, which is being fought by the Russian element in the East End. I told Bentwich that we must proceed with the allotment on Thursday, June 29, no matter what. He made all sorts of objections, but still I carried my point. By now the difficulties have been overcome and are therefore forgotten. They loomed large on June 27.

 

At one point Bentwich, who for reasons incomprehensible to me is slipping bâtons dans les roues [a spoke in the wheel], demanded the approval of all out-of-town directors for an amendment to a resolution on which he was making the allotment dependent. By this he obviously intended to delay the matter, during which time I would have to leave. I beat this down with long telegrams which cost £17., and the next morning everyone’s consent to the allotment was on hand. In London cash down-payments in the amount of £57,000 had been made for over 250,000 shares (the minimum), but only 228,000 shares had been registered.

אחר־כך אל St. Martin’s Town Hall אל הוועידה של הפדרציה הציונית האנגלית. דיברתי בשבח הפדרציה, שמעוררת עוינות אצל היהודים הרוסים מן האיסט־אֶנד. הבהרתי לבֶּנטוויץ׳ שביום ה׳, 29 ביוני, חייבים לגשת להקצאת המניות ויהי מה. הוא הערים את כל הקשיים שרק אפשר, ואף־על־פי־כן הצלחתי להגשים את העניין. על הקשיים הללו כבר גברנו, ועל כן הם נשכחו. הם נראו גדולים ב־27 ביוני.

בֶּנטוויץ׳, שמסיבות שלא נתחוורו לי תוקע bâtons dans les roues (מקלות בגלגלים), דרש ברגע מסוים את הסכמתם של כל המנהלים שמחוץ ללונדון לשינוי באחת ההחלטות, והִתנה בה את הקצאות המניות. מן הסתם רצה לגרום בכך השהיה שבמהלכה הייתי אני צריך לעזוב. גברתי על כך באמצעות טלגרמות ארוכות, שעלו 17 ליש״ט, וביום שלמחרת הגיעו כל ההסכמות להקצאת המניות. בלונדון שולמו מִקדמות על־סך 57 אלף ליש״ט בעבור יותר מ־250 אלף מניות (המינימום), אך רק 228 אלף נרשמו לפי שעה.
