Ich erklärte es mit dem Talente Drumonts u. der Verhasstheit der Rothschilds. Er wies auf die Affaire Dreyfus hin mit ihrem explosiven Charakter u. bemerkte zu dem, was ich über Drumont gesagt, anerkennend: auch Lueger sei nicht le premier venue. Im Uebrigen gab er an, dass ihm der Antisemitismus wie alles Ueber= triebene, Ungesunde antipathisch sei, wenn ihm auch natürlich ein Christ näher stehe als ein Jude. 2° wunderte er sich über die geringe Zahl der Juden. Wenn sie zu Christi Zeiten nur im Ganzen 100,000 ge= wesen wären, müssten sie bei Ver= dopplung innerhalb 50 Jahren jetzt doch schon eine Milliarde zählen. (Ich glaube die Rechnung ist etwas phantastisch)   Doch bemerkte ich ernst: Nous avons (xx) subi des pertes cruelles au cours de notre histoire, surtout au moyen-age

He referred to the Dreyfus case and its explosive character, and in appreciation of what I had said about Drumont, remarked that Lueger, too, was not le premier venu [the first on the scene].

(I think this calculation is a bit fantastic.)

 

But I remarked gravely:

“Nous avons subi des pertes cruelles au cours de notre histoire, surtout au moyen-âge [We have sustained grievous losses in the course of our history, especially during the Middle Ages]."

תירצתי את הדבר בכשרונו של דרימוֹן ובשנאה העמוקה לרוטשילדים.

הוא נדרש לפרשת דרייפוס ולחומר הנפץ הטמון בה, ולגבי מה שאמרתי על דרימוֹן העיר מתוך הערכה: גם לוּאֶגֶר איננו le premier venu (קוטל קנים).

עוד אמר, שהאנטישמיות, כמו כל דבר מוגזם וחולני, מאוסה בעיניו, הגם שמטבע הדברים נוצרי קרוב אליו יותר מיהודי.

 

  1. הוא התפלא על מספרם המועט של היהודים. אם בזמנו של ישו היו בסך הכול 100 אלף, הרי אילו הוכפל מספרם כל חמישים שנה, היו צריכים למנות עכשיו מיליארד (דומני שהחשבון הזה הוא קצת פנטסטי).

ואולם אמרתי ברצינות:

 

“Nous avons subi des pertes cruelles au cours de nôtre histoire surtout au moyen age”

 

("סבלנו אבדות אכזריות במרוצת ההיסטוריה שלנו, בייחוד בימי־הביניים").
