Diary 6

October 5, 1898 – April 21, 1899

In order to secure support for the Zionist cause in opposition to the Sultan’s stance, Theodor Herzl engages with crucial figures associated with the German Emperor, Wilhelm II. He journeys through Izmir, Athens, Crete, and Alexandria to Constantinople and Palestine in pursuit of an audience with the emperor. Once in Palestine, he stops in Jaffa, Mikveh Israel, Nes Ziona, Rishon LeZion, Rehovot, Motza, and Jerusalem, culminating in the crucial meeting with the Emperor outside the Old City. The Grand Duke of Baden corresponds with Herzl and provides insights into the Emperor’s and the Sultan’s impressions

Efforts to secure an audience with the Russian Czar are undertaken, alongside initiating discussions and underwriting operations for establishing the Jewish Colonial Trust. During this pivotal period, Philip Michael Ritter von Newlinski passes away suddenly in Constantinople.
