Alter „tauglich“ waren, oder nicht, ob sie auch dienstpflichtig sind, oder nicht, ob sie gesund oder krank sind. — Hinschleppen müßen sie sich, zur Armee, ihrer bisherigen Vaterländer, und wenn sie in feindlichen Lagern stehen, auf ein= ander schießen. — Die Einen mögen das für die Tilgung einer Ehrenschuld an­ sehen, die anderen als eine Anzahlung auf unsere künftige Ehre. — Thun müssen es Alle. — Schiff war heute bei mir. — Ich bat ihn mich während eini­ger Tage zu vertreten. — Ob ich eine Zeitung mache?  fragte er, als ich einige wage Andeutungen machte. — Eine Zeitung! — Il y a belle lurette que je n'y pense plus — wahr ist freilich, daß ich die praktische Ideen zuerst für die Begründung der „Neuen Zeitung[“] suchte. — Wie Saul der auszog! — Schiffs Schwager sagte neulich: Auswandern ja, ich möchte schon. — Aber wohin?  Schweiz? — — hat zuerst Gesetze gegen Juden gemacht!— Wohin? — Über diese Frage habe ich mich innerlich sehr ge­freut. —

 when they reached the draft age, whether they are still of military age, whether they are healthy or sick. They must drag themselves to the army of their present fatherland, and if they are on opposite sides, they must shoot at one another.

 

Some may regard this as paying a debt of honor, others as a down-payment on our future honor. But all will have to do it.

Schiff came to see me today. I asked him to substitute for me for a few days. Was I starting a newspaper? he asked when I dropped a few vague hints.

 

A newspaper! Il y a belle lurette que je n'y pense plus [I haven’t thought of that for a long time].

 

True enough, I first sought the practical ideas with the founding of the “Neue Zeitung“ in mind.

 

Like Saul, who went forth. . . !

Schiff’s brother-in-law said the other day: Emigrate? Yes, I'd like to, all right. But where to? Switzerland? The first country to make laws against the Jews!

 

Where to? This question made me inwardly very happy.

 במועד שנקראו לגיוס חובה ובין שלא היו, בין שהם חייבים בשירות ובין שאינם חייבים בו, בין שבריאים הם ובין שחולים. מן הדין שיגררו את עצמם אל הצבא של המולדות שלהם, ואם יהיו ניצבים במחנות אויבים, שיירו זה על זה.

יש שיוכלו לראות בכך פרעון חוב של כבוד ויש שיוכלו להתייחס לכך כאל מפרעה לַכּבוד שלנו שלעתיד לבוא. הכול צריכים לעשות זאת.

שיף היה אצלי היום. ביקשתי ממנו שימלא את מקומי כמה ימים. הוא שאל אותי כשרמזתי רמז דק כלשהו, אם אני מתכנן עיתון.

עיתון! Il y a belle lurette que je n'y pense plus (זה עידן ועידנים שאינני חושב על כך עוד). נכון, בתחילה באמת תרתי אחרי רעיונות מעשיים כדי לייסד את Neue Zeitung.

כמו שאול שיצא [לחפש את האתונות ומצא את המלוכה].

גיסו של שיף אמר זה לא מכבר: להגר כֵּן, אכן הייתי רוצה בכך. אבל לאן? לשווייץ?

היא היתה ראשונה לחקיקת חוקים נגד יהודים!

לאן? על השאלה הזאת שמחתי בלבי מאוד.
