sitzt neben dem rothbefezten Kutscher mein Dragoman. Fahrt durch winklige schmutzige Strassen nach Stambul. Die Hohe Pforte ist ein verfallen= des altes schmutziges grossartiges Haus, erfüllt vom merkwür= digsten Leben. Auf Sock kleinen Sockeln der Vorhallen stehen die wachhabenden Soldaten. Wem Arme Teufel hocken auf der Erde. Eine Unzahl von Beamten und Dienern läuft auf und ab. Mein erster Besuch bei S[eine]r Excellenz Khair Eddin Bey dem Generalsecretär des Gross= veziers. Die Namen aller der Functionäre schreibe ich nach dem Gehör auf. Ich weiss nicht ob richtig. Erst heute erfahre ich dass der Sohn des Grossveziers nicht Djawid sondern Djewad Bey heisst.

A drive through winding, filthy streets to Stambul. The Sublime Porte is a decaying, old, dirty, imposing building, humming with the most remarkable activity. The soldiers on guard duty stand on small pedestals in the entrance halls.

 

Poor devils squat on the ground. Countless officials and servants run up and down.

 

My first call was on His Excellency, Khair Eddin Bey, Secretary-General to the Grand Vizier. I am writing down by ear the names of all the functionaries. I don't know whether correctly. I learned only today that the son of the Grand Vizier is not named Djawid, but Djewad Bey.

 ביקורי הראשון הוא אצל הוד מעלתו חֵיר א־דין בֵּיי, המזכיר הכללי של הוואזיר הגדול. את שמות כל נושאי התפקידים אני רושם על־פי השמיעה. אינני יודע אם אני רושם נכון. רק היום נודע לי ששם בנו של הוואזיר הגדול לא דז׳אוויד אלא דזֶ׳וואד בֵּיי.
