This looks as though I were asking a very exhaustive memorandum of you. On the contrary, please put down only what is known to you about all these matters at the moment.

 

It cannot be difficult for a man as skilled in words and with the pen as you are and who has surely given this matter so much deep thought to write this down or dictate it in a few hours. But if you dictate it, your secretary must not find out for what purpose it is being done.

 

Let me right at this point request you most earnestly to keep our correspondence as well as all succeeding steps a complete secret. The matter is an infinitely serious one. You can see this from the fact that I am not telling a word even to my parents and closest relatives. I am relying on your discretion.

סקירה קצרה של רדיפות יהודים חמורות או חמורות פחות שנודע לך עליהן (בפרלמנטים, בעיתונות, באסֵפות, ברחוב), סימנים לגידולה או להצטמצמותה של האנטישמיות ובאיזו מידה — אנטישמיות רשמית ורשמית־למחצה — שנאת יהודים בבתי־ספר, במשרדי ממשלה, בקרב מקצועות מבוקרים וחופשיים. 

זה נראה כאילו אני מבקש ממך תזכיר מייגע. לא. הואל־נא להעלות על הכתב רק את מה שידוע לך ברגע זה על כל הנושאים האלה. 

אדם כמוך, האמון כל־כך על העט ועל המלה המדוברת, שבוודאי הִרבָּה לתת את דעתו לעניין, ובכובד ראש, לא יקשה עליו להעלותו על הכתב או להכתיבו בתוך שעות אחדות. ואולם אם אתה עומד להכתיב, אסור שלכתבן שלך ייוודע לשם מה זה נכתב.

כבר במקום הזה ברצוני לבקש במפגיע שתשמור על סודיות מוחלטת של חליפת המכתבים שלנו ושל יתר הצעדים שיבואו. העניין רציני ביותר. עדות לכך, שגם להורי ולבני משפחתי הקרובים ביותר אינני אומר על כך אף מלה. אני סומך על שתיקתך.
