Ich würde mich bemühen, sie zu einer kleinen Anleihe von 1-2 Mill[ionen] £ zu bewegen, da nach meiner Ansicht dies unseren ferneren Plan nicht compro= mittirt. Das Geld wäre in ein Fass ohne Boden geworfen. Wir würden aber dadurch hier festen Fuss fassen und beliebt werden. Ich bitte Newlinski, nur ja alles Mögliche aufzubieten, damit mich der Sultan empfange. Wenn ich ohne Empfang mit Nein zurückkehre, wird man Alles für Traum halten. Vorläufig wagt natürlich Niemand dem Sultan von mir zu reden, nach dem formellen Refus, das er Newlinski vor Münir Pascha, Izzet Bey etc gegeben.

 Today I proposed to Newlinsky that we hold out the prospect of an initial transaction to the people at the Palace and the Porte. I would try to induce them to take a small loan of one or two million, since in my opinion this would not compromise our future plan. The money would be thrown into a bottomless well, but with it we would gain a firm footing and become popular.

 

I begged Newlinsky to do everything possible to get the Sultan to receive me. If I return home without an audience, with a “No,” people will take everything for a dream.

 

At present, of course, no one dares mention me to the Sultan, after the formal refusal which he gave Newlinsky in the presence of Münir Pasha, Izzet Bey, etc.

 אני מציע לנֶוולינסקי לדבר עם האנשים בארמון וב״שער העליון" על אפשרות של עִסקה מִקדמית. אני אשתדל להניע אותם לקבל הלוואה קטנה של מיליון עד שני מיליון לירות טורקיות, באשר לדעתי הדבר לא ישפיע לרעה על תוכניתנו להבא. הכסף אמנם יושלך אל תוך חבית בלי תחתית, אבל על־ידי זה נקנה לנו כאן אחיזה וחיבה.

אני מבקש מנֶוולינסקי לפעול בכל האמצעים כדי שהסולטאן יקבל אותי לריאיון. אם אשוב הביתה עם "לאו" בלי ריאיון, יתייחסו אל הכול כאל חלום.

לפי שעה אין איש מעז כמובן לדבר עם הסולטאן על אודותי, לאחר הסירוב הפורמלי שהשמיע באוזני נֶוולינסקי בנוכחות מוּניר פֶּחָה, איזֶט בֵּיי וכו'.
