Es war mir nur angenehm, von den egoistischen Händeln der Grossen zu hören, weil ich mich dabei in meiner reinen Bewegung ein bischen überlegen fühlte und mehr Sicherheit bekam. … hat diese Plötzlich öffnete sich die Thüre des Arbeitszimmers und ein alter, kräftig aber nicht fett aussehender General trat ein: der Grossherzog. Wir sprangen von unseren Fauteuils auf. Ich machte zwei Verbeugungen. Der Grossherzog reichte Hechler die Hand — von meiner (xx) schicklich entblössten Rechten machte er keinen Gebrauch. Er lud uns mit einer Handbewegung ein, ihm zu folgen. Ich trat als Letzter ein, schloss die Thür hinter mir. Ich weiss gar nicht, wie es im Arbeitszimmer aussieht, denn die ganze Zeit musste ich den Grossherzog als Sprechender oder

Suddenly the door from the study opened, and there entered an old general who looked robust but not obese—the Grand Duke. We jumped up from our arm-chairs. I made two bows. The Grand Duke shook hands with Hechler—but did not avail himself of my fittingly bared right hand. He motioned to us to follow him. I went in last and closed the door behind me. I have no idea how the study looked, for I had to keep my eyes on the Grand Duke, either speaking or listening, all the time.

ואולם נהניתי לשמוע על מעשיהם האנוכיים של הגדולים, כי על־ידי כך הרגשתי נעלה מהם בתוך תנועתי הטהורה, ובטחוני גבר בי.

לפתע נפתחה הדלת של חדר העבודה ונכנס גנרל זקן, בעל גוף חסון אך לא שמן: הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג. קפצנו מן הכורסאות. החוויתי שתי קידות. הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג הושיט את ידו להֶכלֶר, ואולם לידי הימנית החשופה כהלכה לא נזקק. בתנועת יד הזמין אותנו לבוא אחריו. אני נכנסתי אחרון, סגרתי את הדלת אחרַי. אינני יודע כלל כיצד נראה חדר העבודה, שהרי כל הזמן היה עלי להסתכל בגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג, אם כדובר, אם כמקשיב.
