Singer meinte, man müsse die Sache zuerst den namhaften Juden: Lord Rothschild , Mocatta, Montefiore etc. unterbreiten. Ich antwortete: „Ich bin nicht majo= risirbar. Es ist die Sache der armen Juden, nicht der Reichen. Der Protest der Letzteren ist null, nichtig und werthlos. Ich möchte dennoch die Sache durch ein Comité machen lassen, weil sie unpersönlich geführt werden muss.“ Asher Meyer sagte: „Nein, Sie sind der Mann sie zu führen. Sie müssen der Märtyrer dieser Idee sein. Die orthodoxen Juden werden mitgehen, aber Sie für einen schlechten Juden halten. Und zwar werden die Juden nicht nach Argentinien, sondern nach Palästina wollen.“ Er verlangte ein Resumé meiner Broschüre für den Jewish Chronicle, was ich ihm auch versprach.

I answered: “You can’t make me yield to majorities. This is the cause of the poor Jews, not of the rich ones. The protest of the latter is null, void, and worthless. Nevertheless, I should like to have the project carried out by a committee, because it must be conducted in an impersonal way.”

 

Asher Myers said: “No, you are the man to conduct it. You must be the martyr to this idea. The orthodox Jews will join with you, but consider you a bad Jew. And besides, the Jews will not want to go to Argentina, but to Palestine.”

 

He asked me for a resumé of my pamphlet for the Jewish Chronicle, and I promised him one.

סינגר אמר שתחילה צריך להציע את העניין ליהודים החשובים: לורד רוטשילד, מוֹקאטָה, מוֹנטֶפיורי וכו'.

עניתי: "אינני מכפיף את עצמי לרוב קולות. זה עניינם של היהודים העניים, לא של העשירים. המחאה של אלה שווה לאפס, אין לה כל ערך. ובכל זאת הייתי רוצה שהעניין ינוהל על־ידי ועדה, שהרי יש לנהלו לא באורח אישי".

אשר מאיר [צ״ל: מאיֶרס] אמר: לא, אתה האיש שצריך לנהל את העניין. אתה צריך להיות המַרטיר של הרעיון הזה. היהודים האורתודוקסים יצטרפו, אבל אתה תהיה בעיניהם יהודי רע. ובעצם היהודים לא ירצו ללכת לארגנטינה., אלא לארץ־ישראל.

הוא ביקש שאתן לו סיכום של החוברת שלי בשביל Jewish Chronicle, וזאת הבטחתי.
