Brüder  Hollinek gesprochen. Sind Beide vermuthlich Antisemiten. Sie begrüssten mich ernst und herzlich. Die Broschüre hat ihnen gut gefallen. Der Eine sagt: Es war nothwendig , dass ein Mann aufgestanden ist, der die Vermittlung übernimmt.   4 Feber[1896]. Nachts (xx) stundenlang aufgelegen, die Situation in der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] überdacht. Es ist kein Zweifel, dass ich mitten im Kampf bin. Bacher sagte gestern: „Sie verbrennen die Schiffe hinter sich!“ Ich muss, wenn ich mit Benedikt rede, ihm zu verstehen geben, was ihnen bevorsteht, wenn sie mir ihr Wort nicht halten. Sollte er mich aus der Redaction hinaus= drängen, so muss ich sofort ein anderes Blatt zur Verfügung haben. Im Nothfall mache ich noch eine Broschüre, worin alle Vorgänge in kühlem Ton erzählt werden. In diesem Feldzug war ich lange auf die erste Schlacht vorbereitet. Ich bin nur geradeaus marschirt. Plötzlich ein kleines Treffen, das nach gar nichts aussieht. Wenige Schüsse herüber, hinüber.

February 4

 

Lay awake for hours during the night, reflecting about the situation at the Neue Freie Presse. There is no doubt that I am in the thick of the battle. Bacher said yesterday; “You are burning your bridges behind you!“

 

When I speak with Benedikt I must make him understand what faces them if they do not keep their promise to me.

 

If he forces me to leave the paper, I must immediately have another paper at my disposal. If worst comes to worst, I shall write another pamphlet telling dispassionately of all happenings. In this campaign I have long been prepared for the first battle. I only marched straight ahead. Suddenly, a small skirmish that does not look like anything. Just a few shots back and forth.

 האחים הוֹלינֶק. אני משער ששניהם אנטישמים. הם קידמו את פני ברצינות ובלבביות. החוברת נשאה חן בעיניהם. האחד אומר: נחוץ היה שיקום מישהו ויקבל עליו את מעשה התיווך.

 


4 בפברואר [1896]

בלילה שכבתי ער שעות ארוכות, שקלתי את המצב  ב־.N.Fr.Pr. אין ספק שאני בעיצומו של הקרב. 

בּאכֶר אמר אתמול: "אתה שורף את הגשרים שמאחוריך!" כשאדבר עם בֶּנֶדיקט אני חייב להסביר להם מה צפוי להם אם יפרו את הבטחתם. והיה אם ידחפו אותי החוצה מן המערכת, צריך שיעמוד לרשותי מיד עיתון אחר. 

אם לא תהיה ברֵרה, אכתוב עוד חוברת ואספר בה בקור־רוח על כל מהלך העניינים. זה זמן רב אני מוכן לקרב הראשון במערכה הזאת. אלא שצעדתי היישר קדימה. פתאום מפגש קטן שאינו נראה חשוב, כמה יריות בשני הכיוונים.
