Ich mache die ganze Sache ohne Narretheien, ohne alle schwärmerischen Geberden. Ich sehe sogar den Fall ganz ruhig voraus, dass meine Anregung ins Leere fällt.“ Er: „Das zeigt mir nur, dass Sie ein Chochem sind. Zunächst wird man Sie freilich lächerlich machen. In den Judenblättern wird man Sie den Mahdi aus der Pelikangasse nennen.“ Ich lachte: „Sie sollen’s nur thun.“ Er sagte endlich: „Wenn ich nicht wüsste, dass Sie nicht käuflich sind, und wenn ich Rothschild wäre, würde ich Ihnen fünf Millionen dafür anbieten, dass Sie die Broschüre unterdrücken. Oder ich würde Sie ermorden. Denn Sie werden den Juden (xx) schrecklich schaden. Uebrigens werde ich Ihre Broschüre aufmerksam lesen, und wenn Sie mich überzeugen, werde ich mich ehrlich zu Ihnen bekennen.“ Ich lieh ihm die Broschüre auf sein Ehren=

Amused, I rejected both comparisons, and said: “I am, quite simply, a modern and, at the same time, natural and unaffected person. I am doing the whole thing without any nonsense or fanciful gestures. I can even contemplate with equanimity the possibility that my enterprise will come to nothing.”

 

He: “This merely shows me that you are a hokhem [clever person]. At first people will certainly make a laughing-stock of you. The Jewish-owned papers will call you the Mahdi of the Pelikangasse.”

 

“Just let them,” I laughed.

 

Finally he said: “If I didn’t know that you can’t be bought, and if I were Rothschild, I would offer you five million to suppress the pamphlet. Or I would assassinate you. For you will do the Jews terrible harm.

 

“Incidentally, I shall read your pamphlet with care; and if you convince me, I shall honestly acknowledge that I am on your side.”

 

I lent him the pamphlet on his word of honor that he would not publish anything from it without my authorization.

ברוח מבודחת דחיתי את שתי ההשוואות ואמרתי: "אני פשוט אדם מודרני, הפועל בתום לב ובלי משוא פנים. אני עושה את כל העניין בלי התחכמויות, בלי עוויתות של הוזה הזיות. אני אף מביא בחשבון, בשלוות נפש, שפעולתי לא תישא כל פרי".

הוא: ״זה רק מצביע שאתה חכם [במקור: Chochem]. בתחילה ישימו אותך ללעג.

בעיתוני היהודים יכנו אותך המַהַדי מרחוב פֶּליקאן" .

צחקתי: "שרק יעזו".

לבסוף אמר: "לולא ידעתי שאינך עומד למכירה, ולו הייתי רוטשילד, הייתי מציע לך חמישה מיליונים כדי שתסתלק מן החוברת. או שהייתי רוצח אותך. שהרי תגרום נזק גדול ליהודים. ואולם אקרא את החוברת שלך בתשומת לב, ואם תשכנע אותי, אצטרף אליך בכנות".

השאלתי לו את החוברת לאחר שהבטיח לי בהן־צדק שלא יפרסם מתוכה דבר בלי רשותי.
