Comités in Fluss zu bringen, merkte ich an seinem dienst= beflissenen Wesen die Wirkung meines Erfolgs im Eastend.   Ich bin mit dem Ergebniss meiner Londoner Reise zufrieden. Die bedingte Zusage Montagus u. Goldsmids, mitzugehen, wenn Edmund Rothschild u. der Hirsch= fonds mitthun u. der Sultan sich auf positive Verhandlungen einlässt, genügt mir vorläufig.   16 Juli [1896]     Boulogne sur Mer

 

Es soll immerhin nicht vergessen werden, dass sowol Montagu wie Goldsmid es ablehnten, dem Eastend = Meeting zu präsidiren. Es war auch Keiner von Beiden beim Bankett des Maccabaean Club. Aber ich brauche sie — folglich ...

I am satisfied with the result of my trip to London.

 

The conditional promise of Montagu and Goldsmid to join in with us if Edmond Rothschild and the Hirsch Fund participate and the Sultan enters into positive negotiations, suffices me for the present.

Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that both Montagu and Goldsmid declined to preside at the East End meeting. Nor did either of them attend the banquet of the Maccabean Club.

 

But I need them—consequently———

ההבטחה על־תנאי של מוֹנטאגיוּ ושל גולדסמיד, שילכו אתי אם אֶדמוּנד רוטשילד וקרן־הירש ישתפו פעולה והסולטאן יהיה מוכן להיכנס למשא־ומתן חיובי, די בה בשבילי לפי שעה.

בכל זאת אין לשכוח, שגם מוֹנטאגיוּ וגם גולדסמיד דחו את ההצעה להיות יושבי־ראש באסֵפה באיסט־אֶנד. גם בנשף של "מועדון־המכבים" לא נכח לא זה ולא זה.

ואולם אני זקוק להם, ולפיכך…
