Nun hörte ich aus dem Nebenzimmer Stimmen und er­kannte die eines seiner Wohlthätigkeits= Beamten, mit dem ich einmal in Wien und zweimal hier flüchtig gesprochen hatte. Es war mir unangenehm, dass mich der beim Herauskommen sehen würde. Vielleicht hatte Hirsch das auch absichtlich so eingerichtet. Darüber musste ich wieder lächeln, denn in seine Abhängigkeit zu gerathen, war ich nicht gesonnen. Entweder ich machte mir ihn ge= fügig oder ich ging unverrichteter Sache weg. Ich hatte sogar schon die Antwort, wenn er mir im Ver­lauf des Gesprächs anbieten sollte, eine Stellung bei der Jewish Association anzunehmen: „In Ihren Dienst? Nein.– In den der Juden? Ja!“ Jetzt kamen die (xx) zwei Beamten heraus. Dem Einen, von den ich kannte, gab ich die Hand. Dann sagte ich dem Baron: „Ha­ben Sie eine Stunde für mich? Wenn es nicht mindestens eine Stunde ist, fange ich lieber gar nicht an. So lange brauche ich, um nur anzudeuten, wie viel ich zu sagen habe.“

Then I heard voices from the adjoining room and recognized that of one of his philanthropic functionaries with whom I had exchanged a few words in Vienna once, and on two occasions here.

 

I did not like the idea of his seeing me here on his way out. Perhaps Hirsch had arranged it that way on purpose. This thought made me smile again, for I was not minded to become at all dependent on him. Either I would bend him to my will or I would leave with my mission unaccomplished. I was even ready with an answer if, during our conversation, he should offer me a position with the Jewish Association: “Enter your service? No. That of the Jews? Yes!”

 

Then the two officials came out. I shook hands with the one I knew. To the Baron I said: “Can you spare me an hour? If it is not at least an hour, I’d rather not start at all. I need that amount of time merely to indicate how much I have to say.”

והנה שמעתי קולות מן החדר הסמוך והכרתי את קולו של אחד מפקידי־הצדקה שלו ששוחחתי אִתו שיחות אקראי פעם בווינה ופעמיים כאן.

חשתי שלא בנוח שהלה יראה אותי בצאתי. ואולי הירש סידר זאת במתכוון. שוב צריך הייתי לחייך על כך, שהרי לא היה בכוונתי כלל להיעשות תלוי בו. או שֶאַטֶה אותו לרצוני, או שאלך לי בלי להשיג דבר. גם התשובה כבר היתה מוכנה בפי, אם במהלך השיחה יציע לי לקבל משרה ב־Jewish Association: ״בשירותך? לא. — בשירותם של היהודים? כן!"

עתה יצאו שני הפקידים. לזה שהכרתיו הושטתי את ידי. אחר־כך אמרתי לברון: "היש לך שעה בשבילי? אם אין זו שעה לפחות, מוטב שלא אתחיל כלל. זה הזמן הדרוש לי רק כדי לרמֵז כמה יש לי להגיד".
