בתחילה הביט בי בהשתאות כשדיברתי בנחרצות שכזאת, ואחר־כך הנהן.

אחר־כך דיברתי בהרחבה על היתרונות הכלליים שתביא מדינת־היהודים לאירופה. אנחנו נעשה להבראת קן החולי של האוריינט. נבנה את מסילות הברזל לאסיה, את דרך המלך של עמי התרבות. ודרך המלך הזאת לא תהיה עוד אחר־כך נחלתה של מעצמה אחת ויחידה.

הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג אמר: "זה עשוי גם לפתור את בעיית מצרים. אנגליה אוחזת במצרים רק משום שהיא צריכה להבטיח שם את נתיבה להודו. הלכה למעשה מצרים עולה יותר משהיא שווה".

הֶכלֶר אמר: "לרוסיה יש אולי שאיפות לגבי ארץ־ישראל?"

הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג: "אינני סבור כך. לרוסיה יש די והותר מה לעשות, ולזמן רב, במזרח אסיה".
