Er war von Basel noch einmal nach Karlsruhe gefahren und hatte dort den Orientzug bestiegen. „Die Differenz gegen den gewöhnlichen Zug (xx) will ich auf eigene Kosten übernehmen“, sagte er. Das lehnte ich natürlich ab. Er soll die ganze Reise auf meine Kosten gemacht haben. Für meine heutigen Verhältnisse ist das allerdings ein kleines Opfer. Wir fuhren angenehm. Er (xx) faltete im Coupé seine Karten von Palästina auseinander und belehrte mich stundenlang. Die Grenze im Norden sollte das Gebirge gegen Kappadocien

April 26, Vienna

 

When I boarded the Orient Express at Munich yesterday at noon, Hechler was on it. From Basel he had gone to Karlsruhe again and there boarded the Orient Express. “I will pay the difference in fares out of my own pocket,” he said.

 

Naturally I wouldn’t hear of it. The whole trip shall be at my expense. In my present circumstances this is a bit of a sacrifice, to be sure.

 

We had a comfortable trip. In the compartment he unfolded his maps of Palestine and instructed me for hours on end. The northern frontier ought to be the mountains facing Cappadocia;

נסענו בנעימים. הוא פרס בתוך התא את מפות ארץ־ישראל שלו ובמשך שעות לימדני דעת. הגבול בצפון צריך להיות האזור ההררי מול קאפּאדוֹקיה,
