Eigenliebe. Ich werde noch Verschiedenes sehen und hören. Und Hirsch ergänzte sein Lob dahin: „Aber Sie haben so phantastische Einfälle.“ Da stand ich auf: „Ja, habe ich Ihnen denn nicht vorher ge­sagt, dass Ihnen das zu einfach oder zu phantastisch vor­kommen wird? Sie wissen nicht, was das Phan= tastische ist, und dass man nur von einer Höhe aus die grossen Züge der Menschen betrachten kann.“ Er sagte: „Auswandern wäre das Einzige. Es gibt Länder ge­nug zu kaufen.“ Ich schrie beinahe: „Ja, wer sagt Ihnen denn, dass ich nicht auswandern will. Da steht es, in diesen Notizen. Ich werde zum deutschen Kaiser gehen, und der wird mich verstehen, denn er ist dazu erzogen, grosse Dinge zu beurtheilen ...“ Bei diesen Worten zwinkerte Hirsch (xx) einmal merklich mit den Augen. Impo= nirte ihm meine Grobheit oder (xx)  meine Absicht, mit dem Kaiser zu reden? Vielleicht Beides. – Ich steckte nun meine Notizen

Hirsch now qualified his praise: “But you have such fantastic ideas.”

 

I got up. “Well, didn’t I tell you that it would seem either too simple or too fantastic to you? You don’t know what the fantastic really is and that the great motives of men can be surveyed only from the heights.”

 

“Emigration would be the only solution,” he said. “There are lands enough for sale.”

 

I almost shouted: “Well, who told you that I don’t want to emigrate? It is all there in these notes. I shall go to the German Kaiser; he will understand me, for he has been brought up to be a judge of great things... ”

 

At these words Hirsch blinked perceptibly. Was he impressed by my rudeness, or by my intention to speak with the Kaiser? Perhaps both. I put my notes

 לאהבה העצמית. עוד אֶראה ואשמע כל מיני דברים.

ואילו הירש השלים את שבחיו: "אבל יש לך רעיונות פנטסטיים כל־כך".

כאן קמתי. "כן. האם לא אמרתי לך עוד קודם שהדברים ייראו לך פשוטים מדי או דמיוניים מדי? אינך יודע מהו הדבר הדמיוני, ורק מגבוה אפשר לבחון את המהלכים הגדולים של בני האדם".

הוא אמר: ״להגר — זה הדבר היחיד. יש די ארצות לקנייה".

כמעט צעקתי: "כן, ומי אומר לך שאינני רוצה להגר? הנה זה כתוב כאן, ברשימות הללו. אלך לקיסר הגרמני, והוא יבין אותי, שהרי חונך לשפוט בעניינים גדולים..."

לשמע המלים הללו מצמץ הירש בעיניו באופן שלא היה אפשר שלא להבחין בו. האם גסותי היא שהרשימה אותו, או כוונתי לדבר עם הקיסר? אולי שני הדברים כאחד. כאן שמתי את הרשימות שלי
