8 Juni [1896] Ich war heute bei Newlinksi, der den Eindruck macht, abgekühlt zu sein. Der Moment sei jetzt nicht geeignet für die Reise nach Constantinopel. Der Sultan habe nur die kretensischen Unruhen im Kopf, etc. Vielleicht war Alles, was er mir vor seiner Reise nach London sagte, nur zu dem Zwecke gesagt, dass ich ihn dort unterstütze. Jetzt weicht er zurück und meint er könne nicht uneingeladen nach Constanti= nopel kommen.   9 Juni [1896] Newlinski war Vormittags anderthalb Stunden bei mir. Ich hatte mit ihm eine Kampfunterredung, in der ich ihm wieder Vertrauen zu unserer Sache einzuflössen versuchte. Er ist mir offenbar in London u. auch hier entmuthigt worden. I called today on Newlinsky who gives me the impression of having cooled. He said the present moment was not propitious for the trip to Constantinople; the Sultan thought of nothing but the Cretan riots, etc.

 

Perhaps everything he said to me before his trip to London was said only that I might support him there. Now he backs out and says he cannot come to Constantinople uninvited.

 

June 9

 

Newlinsky spent an hour and a half with me this morning. I had a showdown talk with him, in the course of which I tried to instil in him confidence in our cause again. Obviously his courage has gone out of him in London, and also here. I worked on him very forcefully.

הייתי היום אצל נֶוולינסקי והתרשמתי כי איבד עניין. אין זה הרגע המתאים לנסיעה לקושטא. דעתו של הסולטאן נתונה רק למאורעות בכרתים וכו'.

אולי כל מה שאמר לי לפני נסיעתו ללונדון היה מכוון לכך שאסייע לו שם. עכשיו הוא נסוג ואומר שלא יוכל לבוא לקושטא בלי הזמנה.
