that, als er mir die Schönheit eines Tempels wies. Nur ich wusste dies und Anderes. Von der Sache selbst sprach ich am Vormittag noch nichts. Ich liess zumeist Güdemann reden, der noch nicht ahnte, dass er mich im weiteren Verlauf des Tages Moses nennen würde: Wir kamen zu Tisch im jüdischen Gasthaus Jochsberger zusammen, das mich sehr anheimelte. Der Wirth kannte Güdemann und brachte uns in einem abgesonderten Zimmer unter. Später fand er mit Judenscharfsinn heraus, dass wir (xx) über die Judensache beriethen, und sorgte dafür, dass wir ungestört blieben. Solches Material haben wir in unseren Leuten! Sie errathen, was man Anderen einbläuen müsste. Sie führen es mit Intelligenz und Hingebung aus. Bei Tisch begann zwanglos die Einleitung. Güdemann war mir schon Vormittags nahe ans Herz gekommen. I said nothing that morning concerning the project itself. For the most part I let Güdemann do the talking; he did not dream that he would call me “Moses” before the day was over.

 

We met for luncheon in the Jewish Jochsberger’s Restaurant where I felt very much at home. The proprietor knew Güdemann and set us up in a separate room. Later on he discovered, with Jewish acumen, that we were conferring about the Jewish cause, and saw to it that we remained undisturbed. This is the sort of human material we possess in our people. They divine what one would have to hammer into other people’s heads. They carry it out with intelligence and devotion.

 

At table the subject came up quite naturally. Güdemann had already won his way to my heart during the forenoon. 

 לי את יְפי בית־הכנסת. אני לבדי ידעתי זאת וגם דברים אחרים.

בשעות לפני הצהריים עדיין לא הזכרתי את העניין עצמו. לרוב הנחתי לגידֶמן לדבר, והוא עדיין לא שיער בנפשו שבהמשכו של אותו יום יכנה אותי משה [רבנו].

נפגשנו לסעוד במסעדה היהודית יוֹכסבֶּרגֶר. המסעדה השרתה עלי אווירה ביתית מאוד. בעל־הבית מכיר את גידֶמן והעמיד לרשותנו חדר נפרד. אחר־כך הסיק בחריפותו היהודית שאנו מקיימים התייעצות בעניין־היהודים ודאג שלא יפריעו לנו. תכונות כאלה יש אצל אנשינו! הם מנחשים דברים שלאחרים צריך לתקוע באוזניים בקול גדול. הם עושים זאת בתבונה ובמסירות.

בסעודה התחלתי בהקדמה בלא קושי. כלפי גידֶמן הרגשתי קִרבת־לב עוד לפני הצהריים.
