Bei Hechler traf ich Nachmittags den englischen Bischof Wilkinson , einen klugen, schlanken alten Mann mit weissen Whiskers und dunklen gescheiten Augen. Der Bischof hatte meine Broschüre schon gelesen. Er fand, es wäre „rather a business“. Ich sagte kategorisch: I don’t make businesses. I am a litterary man , worauf der Bischof erklärte, dass er das nicht kränkend gemeint habe. Er halte die Sache vielmehr für eine praktische. Wenn es auch als Geschäft begänne, könne doch etwas Grosses daraus werden. So sei ja auch das indische Reich Englands unbewusst entstanden. Er segnete mich schliesslich und wünschte Gottes Segen für die Sache.  

In the afternoon at Hechler’s home I met the English Bishop Wilkinson, a clever, slim old man with white whiskers and dark, intelligent eyes. The Bishop had already read my pamphlet and thought it was “rather a business"  

 

I said categorically: “I don't make businesses. I am a literary man.”  Whereupon the Bishop declared that he had not meant this as an insult. On the contrary, he regarded the matter as a practical one. Even though it might start as a business, it might become something great. After all, England’s Indian empire had also come into being unconsciously. In the end he blessed me and invoked God’s blessing on the project.

אצל הֶכלֶר פגשתי אחר־הצהריים את ההגמון האנגלי וילקינסוֹן, זקן חכם, גבה קומה, בעל שפם לבן ועיניים כהות פקחיות. הבישוף כבר קרא את החוברת שלי. הוא סבור שזה rather a business (עסק לא פשוט) [תשובתו של הרצל מעידה שלא הבין את הביטוי].

אמרתי בנחרצות: I don't make business, I am a literary man (אינני עושה עסקים, אני איש ספרות), ועל כך הבהיר ההגמון שלא התכוון לפגוע בי. בעיניו העניין מעשי באמת. גם אם יתחילו בו כעסק מסחרי, יכול לצאת ממנו דבר גדול. כך גם נוצרה, בלי דעת מראש, ממלכת הודו של אנגליה. לבסוף בירך אותי והביע תקווה שהאל יברך את העניין.
