Abreise suchte ich es sofort in einer Buch= handlung. Ich hatte vergessen, Sie zu fragen, ob es denn auch von Juden handle? Und ich war darum ängstlich. Nicht meinetwegen, nicht als Literat der fürchtet zu spät gekommen zu sein. (Peream ego!) Nein, sondern weil ich dann besorgen müsste, auch nichts aus= richten zu können, wenn der Plan schon erfolglos durch die Welt lief. Das Buch „Freiland“ war in München nicht zu be= kommen, dafür aber eine neuere Publication Hertzkas „Eine Reise nach Freiland“ (Reclam Univ[ersal] Bibl[iothek]) Ich wurde dadurch auch schon genügend auf= geklärt. Es ist eine recht sinnreiche Phan= tasie, so lebensfern wie der Aequatorberg auf dem „Freiland“ liegt. Sie werden folgenden Vergleich verstehen: „Freiland“ ist eine complicirte Maschinerie mit vielen Zähnen und Rädern, aber nichts beweist mir, dass sie in Betrieb gesetzt werden könne. Hingegen ist mein Plan die Verwendung einer in der Natur vorkommenden Treibkraft,

This book gave me sufficient information, too. It is quite an ingenious fantasy, as remote from life as the equatorial mountain on which “Freeland" is located.

 

You will understand the following comparison:

 

Freeland is a complicated piece of machinery with many cogs and wheels; but I find in it no proof that it can be set in motion.

 

As against this, my plan calls for the utilization of a driving force that actually exists.

לאחר שהלכת פניתי מיד לחפש אותו בחנות ספרים. שכחתי לשאול אותך אם אכן הוא דן גם ביהודים. חששתי משום כך. לא שהיה אכפת לי, לא כאיש ספרות החושש שאיחר את המועד (!Peream ego [ייקח אותי השד!]). לא, מכיוון שאז הייתי צריך לחשוש שגם אני לא אוכל לפעול דבר, כי התוכנית כבר סובבת בעולם בלי הצלחה. לא היה אפשר לקבל במינכן את הספר פריילאנד, אבל אפשר היה לקבל שם פרסום חדש יותר של הֶרצקָה, נ ס י ע ה  ל פ ר י י ל א נ ד (בהוצאת רֶקלאם, אוּניברסַל בּיבּליֹוטֶק).


הספר הזה הספיק לי להבנת הדברים. זו פנטזיה די מתוחכמת, רחוקה מן החיים כמו ההר שעל קו־המשווה שעליו שוכנת "פריילאנד".

אתה תבין את ההשוואה הזאת: 

"פריילאנד" היא מכונה מורכבת ומסובכת, בעלת הרבה שיניים וגלגלים, אלא שאין שם דבר שיוכיח לי שאפשר להפעיל אותה הלכה למעשה.

לעומת זאת, התוכנית שלי משתמשת בכוח מניע הנמצא בטבע.
