Salo und Güdeman[n] sollen Jeder eine Denk=

schrift mitbringen. — Güde[mann] über Zahl,

Vertheilung, zu seiner Kenntniß kommende

Verfolgungen, Zeichen ob Antisem[itismus] wachse %und

in welchem Verhältniß% oder abnehme, officieller

und officiöser Antisem[itismus] — Antisemi[tismus] in Schule

und Ämtern, so weit er's weiß etc. — Kurz

alles, was er über moralische und politische Lage weiß. —

They argued about whether it was good or bad that Lueger’s election as mayor of Vienna had not been ratified.

Their faintheartedness completely dismayed me. They do not suspect it, but they are Ghetto types, quiet, decent, timorous.

Most of our people are like that. Will they understand the call to be free and become human beings?

When I left I was in a very bad humor. My plan again seemed crazy to me.

But in the middle of my défaillance [feeling of depression] I said to myself: I’ve started it and now I’ll go through with it.

The main thing is for me to show determination—at Glion and on future occasions.

A thing like that is only a matter of suggestion. The moment I doubt, I am grotesque.

Salo and Güdemann shall each bring along a memorandum. Güdemann’s should deal with the number and distribution of persecutions that come to his attention, signs as to whether anti-Semitism is increasing (and if so, at what rate) or decreasing, with official and officious anti-Semitism, anti-Semitism in schools and offices, to the extent of his knowledge, etc.—in short, everything that he knows about the moral and political situation.

הם התווכחו אם זה טוב או רע שבחירתו של לואגר לראש עיריית וינה לא אושרה. רפיונם הסליד אותי לחלוטין. הם לא תופסים זאת, אבל הם טיפוסים של גטו, שקטים, ישרים, חדורי פחד.

כך רובם. היבינו את הקריאה לחירות, את הקריאה להיעשות בני־אדם?

בצאתי משם הייתי מדוכדך מאוד. שוב נראתה לי התוכנית שלי עניין מטורף.

סאלו וגידמן צריכים להביא עמם כל אחד תזכיר. גידמן על מספר התקריות ותפוצתן, רדיפות שהוא צופה אותן, אותות על אנטישמיות גוברת (ובאיזה שיעור) או שוככת, אנטישמיות רשמית או רשמית־למחצה, אנטישמיות בבתי־ספר ובמשרדי הרשויות, ככל שידוע לו, וכו'. בקיצור, כל מה שהוא יודע על המצב המוסרי והפוליטי.
