14 Mai [1896] Von Rev[erend] Singer einen lange erwarteten Brief endlich bekommen. Ich glaubte schon, er sei abgefallen wie Güdemann und Andere, die eine Strecke weit mit mir gegangen. Er schreibt, dass Montagu nicht her= vortreten will, aus einigen Gründen, doch habe Montagu ein Exemplar meines Buches Gladstone gegeben. Sollte Gladstone sich äussern, so werde man seinen Worten retentissement in der Presse geben. Ich antworte Singer, indem ich ihm für Montagu erkläre, dass ich keinen „Aufruf“ (was ein echt englischer Gedanke wäre) an den Sultan richten, sondern mit diesem insgeheim unterhandeln und eventuell Montagu nach Konstan= tinopel rufen will, damit er mir secundire. Ich schrieb auch Goldsmid u. Solomon, dass ich im Juli nach London kommen will, um dort (wahrscheinlich bei den Makkabäern) eine grosse Rede über

Received at last a long-awaited letter from the Rev. Singer. I was beginning to think he had dropped off, like Güdemann and others who had gone with me for a distance.

 

He writes that Montagu wants to avoid public notice, for several reasons; but Montagu has given a copy of my book to Gladstone. Should Gladstone express an opinion, his words will be given retentissement [reverberation] in the press.

 

I am answering Singer by informing him for Montagu’s benefit that I do not wish to address an “appeal” to the Sultan (which would be a typically English notion), but will negotiate with him secretly and possibly summon Montagu to Constantinople so that he may support me.

 

I also wrote to Goldsmid and to Solomon that I am planning to come to London in July to make a big speech (probably at the Maccabeans) about the results achieved to date.

סוף־סוף קיבלתי מן הרב סינגֶר מכתב שציפיתי לו זמן רב כל־כך. חשבתי שכבר נָשַר כפי שנשרו גידֶמן ואחרים שעשו אתי כברת דרך.

הוא כותב שמוֹנטאגיוּ אינו רוצה לצאת בפומבי [לטובת העניין] מכמה סיבות, אך עם זאת נתן לגלאדסטוֹן עותק של ספרי. אם גלאדסטוֹן יגיב על כך, יהיה לדבריו הד בעיתונות.

עניתי לסינגֶר והבהרתי בשביל מוֹנטאגיוּ שאין בכוונתי לצאת ב״קריאה" אל הסולטאן (מן הסתם רעיון אנגלי), אלא רוצה אני לשאת ולתת אתו בחשאי וייתכן שאקרא למוֹנטאגיוּ לבוא לקושטא כדי שיעמוד לימיני.

כתבתי גם לגולדסמיד ולסוֹלוֹמוֹן שברצוני לבוא ביולי ללונדון כדי לשאת שם נאום גדול (כנראה אצל ה"מכבים") על התוצאות עד עכשיו.
