6 Juli [1896] Die Rede für die Makkabäer tant bien que mal, ermüdet wie ich schon bin, fertig gemacht. Ich schrieb an Montefiore und Mocatta, dass ich die gestern im Verlauf der Unter= redung vorgebrachte Propo= sition, die Society of Jews zunächst als eine société d’études zu gründen annehme. (Dieser würde ich natür= lich meine bisher acquirir= ten Verbindungen nicht zur Verfügung stellen. Nur einem Actionscomité gebe ich meine Actionsmittel.)   Mocatta antwortet einige Stunden später, er halte den ganzen Plan für unan= nehmbar, den Judenstaat weder für möglich noch für wünschenswerth.

Finished the speech for the Maccabeans tant bien que mal [after a fashion], tired as I am.

 

I wrote to Montefiore and Mocatta that I accepted the proposal, advanced in the course of yesterday’s discussion, to make the Society of Jews, in the beginning, a société d'études [study commission].

 

(To such a body I would not, of course, make available the connections I have already acquired. My resources for action I would give only to a committee geared for action.)

 

A few hours later Mocatta answered that he considered the whole plan unacceptable, and the Jewish State neither possible nor desirable.

את הנאום בשביל ״המכבים״ סיימתי tant bien que mal (איכשהו), אף־על־פי שאני עייף כל־כך.

כתבתי למונטפיורי ולמוֹקאטָה שמקובלת עלי ההצעה שעלתה אתמול בשיחה, לייסד בתחילה את ה־Society of Jews כ־société d'études (חברה למחקר).

(לרשותה של זו לא אעמיד כמובן את הקשרים שרכשתי לי עד עכשיו. את אמצעי הפעולה שלי אתן אך ורק בידי ועד־פועל).

מוֹקאטָה משיב לאחר שעות אחדות, שהתוכנית כולה אינה מתקבלת על הדעת. מדינת־היהודים אינה אפשרית בעיניו, ואף לא רצויה.
