Im Hôtel de Londres warteten Schnirer,

Seidener, Bodenheimer ebenfalls in grosser Auf=

regung. Da auch Danusso zugegen war, rief ich sie

ins Nebenzimmer, machte ihnen eine summarische

Mittheilung u. bat sie mit dem dicken Italiener

in den Speisesaal zu gehen. Ich war ganz erschöpft

von der grossen psychischen Anstrengung u. sollte

doch die schwere wichtige Ansprache ausarbeiten.

Ich trank Thee, erholte mich aber doch nicht so weit,

dass ich die Ansprache fertig machen konnte.

Bis elf Uhr versuchte ich es, während Wolffsohn

meine Koffer für mich packte. Dann suchte ich mich

durch eine Flasche bairischen Biers schläfrig zu

machen u. schlief auch bis vier Uhr Morgens. Da

stand ich auf, zündete alle zwölf Kerzen meines

Schlafzimmers an, schrieb eine halbe Stunde, legte

mich dann wieder erschöpft zu Bette. Um sechs war

ich wieder auf u. machte bis halb neun soviel von

der Ansprache fertig, als mir möglich war, u. schickte

sie mit dem Begleitbrief durch die deutsche Post

an Bülow ab.

Inzwischen hatte Wolffsohn unsere Abreise ge=

managet. Ich brauchte nur (xx) nach dem Hafen

Schnirer, Seidener, and Bodenheimer were waiting at the Hotel de Londres, themselves greatly excited. Since Danusso was also present, I called them into the next room, gave them a summary account, and asked them to take the fat Italian down to the dining-hall with them. I was quite exhausted from the great psychic strain, and still had to compose that difficult and important Address. I had some tea, but still didn’t pull myself together enough to finish the speech.

I kept trying until eleven o’clock, while Wolffsohn was packing my trunks for me. Then I sought to make myself sleepy by drinking a bottle of Bavarian beer, and I did sleep until four o’clock in the morning. Then I got up, lit all twelve candles in my bedroom, wrote for half an hour, and then went back to bed, exhausted. At six o’clock I got up again and finished as much of the Address as I could by half-past eight, when I sent it off to Bülow, with a covering letter, by the German post.In the meantime, Wolffsohn had “managed” our departure.

ב־Hotel de Londres המתינו שְנירֶר, זיידֶנֶר, בּוֹדֶנהיימֶר, גם הם בהתרגשות רבה. היות שגם דאנוּסוֹ היה שם, קראתי להם אל החדר הצדדי, דיווחתי להם בקצרה, וביקשתי מהם שייקחו את האיטלקי השמן לחדר האוכל. הייתי תשוש מן המאמץ הנפשי הרב, והרי היה עלי לעבד את הנאום הקשה והחשוב. שתיתי תה, אבל כוחותי לא עמדו לי לסיים את הנאום.

ניסיתי לעשות זאת עד השעה אחת־עשרה, בעוד וולפסון אורז למעני את המזוודות שלי. אחר־כך ניסיתי להפיל על עצמי שינה על־ידי שתיית בקבוק בירה באווארית, ואכן ישנתי עד ארבע לפנות בוקר. קמתי, הדלקתי את כל שנים־עשר הנרות בחדר השינה שלי, כתבתי חצי שעה, וחזרתי תשוש למיטה. בשש שוב הייתי ער ועד שמונה וחצי סיימתי את כתיבת הנאום ככל שיכולתי, ובאמצעות הדואר הגרמני שלחתיו עם מכתב לוואי אל בּילוֹב. וולפסון טיפל בינתיים ביציאתנו.
