Mir passte es nicht, einen

Streit über groben Streit als

Illoyalität lehne ich entschiedenst ab.

Wenn Vincenti geplaudert hat, obwol

er Discretion versprach, ist das

nicht meine Schuld. Uebrigens war

ich Nachmittag bei Newlinski und

Es ist meine Ueberzeugung, dass

auch Newlinski an dieser Subven=

tionsgeschichte absolut unbetheiligt

ist. Sie werden es aber begreiflich

finden, dass ich die Sache nicht

so einfach auf sich beruhen lassen

konnte. Sie haben in Ihrem heutigen

Leitartikel die Theilung der Türkei

verlangt. Damit sind Sie aus

dem Wasser — ich noch nicht.“

It did not suit me to have a bad quarrel recorded as the cause of my resignation from the N. Fr. Pr. Therefore I answered resolutely but calmly: “I most firmly reject the charge of disloyalty. If Vincenti blabbed in spite of his promise of secrecy, that is not my fault. Incidentally, I saw Newlinski this afternoon and didn't mention Dóczy to him. I am convinced that Newlinski, too, had absolutely no part in this subvention story. But you will understand that I could not simply let the matter pass. In your editorial of today you demanded the partitioning of Turkey. This puts you in the clear, but I’m still in the woods.”

אין זה לפי כבודי שמריבה גסה תשמש עילה ליציאתי מ־.N.Fr.Pr. על כן השבתי בהחלטיות ובשלווה: "את חוסר הנאמנות אני דוחה מכול וכול. אם גילה וינצֶנטי סודות מן החדר, אף־על־פי שהבטיח לשמור את הדבר בסוד, אין זו אשמתי. דרך אגב, אחר־הצהריים הייתי אצל נֶוולינסקי ולא נקבתי את שמו של דוֹצי. אני משוכנע שגם לנֶוולינסקי לא היתה יד בסיפור הזה כלל וכלל. אבל אתה הלוא תבין שלא יכולתי להניח לעניין סתם כך. במאמר הראשי שלך היום קראת לחלוקתה של טורקיה, וכך הצלת את עורְךָ שלך — לא כן אני".
