Deutscherseits ist man allerdings über den Werth

Deutsch=Ost=Afrikas trotz der Preisgabe Sansibars und

Witus anderer Meinung; man dürfte deßhalb in Berlin

dem Vorschlag der genannten englischen Revue einen

lediglich akademischen Werth beilegen.

Die Glosse: dass es nicht ernst zu nehmen

sei, machte mich nicht ganz ungläubig, denn

die Urtheile der N[euen] F[reien] P[resse] — ich kenne ja

ihre Richter — sind nicht immer die

klügsten.

Im ersten Ansturm wollte ich an Eulen=

burg schreiben u. Propositionen für

den Fall der Richtigkeit machen. Deutsch=

land müsste dann eine jüdische Ansied=

lung auf Cypern mit Lust begrüssen.

hinüberfahren u. es mit Gewalt nehmen,

wie man es uns einst genommen hat.

Aber ich überschlief mir diese allzufarbige

Idee u. die Nacht brachte mir den Rath=

schluss, dass nichts reden in diesem Augen=

blicke das Gescheiteste sei. Kriegt Deutsch=

land Cypern, so habe ich nachher noch

Gelegenheit, die Sache via Eulenburg u.

If Germany ever got into the position of having to defend her rights in Asia Minor by force of arms, Cyprus would constitute a very valuable base of operations, and England would in no way have anything to fear from Germany’s taking over this island. In Germany, to be sure, there is a different opinion regarding the value of German East Africa, despite the abandonment of Zanzibar and Witu; therefore Berlin will probably attach only academic importance to the proposals of the above-mentioned English periodical.

The comment that the proposal was not to be taken seriously made me not entirely incredulous, for the judgments of the N. Fr. Pr.—after all, I know its judges—are not always the wisest.

In the first excitement I wanted to write to Eulenburg and make proposals in case it was true. Germany would then have to welcome a Jewish settlement on Cyprus with delight.

We would rally on Cyprus and one day go over to Eretz Israel and take it by force, as it was taken from us long ago.

But I slept on this all-too-lurid idea, and the night brought me the decision that at this moment the wisest thing was to say nothing. Should Germany get Cyprus, I shall afterwards still have the opportunity to attempt the matter via Eulenburg and the Grand Duke.

אם תיקלע גרמניה למצב שיהיה עליה להגן בכוח הנשק על זכויותיה באסיה הקטנה, תהיה קפריסין בסיס פעולה רב־ערך, ואילו אנגליה איננה צריכה לחשוש בשום פנים מהעברת האי הזה לידי גרמניה. ואולם בגרמניה חושבים אחרת על ערכה של מזרח אפריקה, למרות הוויתור על זַאנזיבּאר ועל ויטוּ; משום כך מייחסים מן הסתם בברלין להצעה של כתב העת האנגלי הזה ערך אקדמי בלבד.

הפרשנות שאין להתייחס לעניין ברצינות לא גרמה לי שלא אאמין בכך לחלוטין, כי השיפוט של .N.Fr.Pr – הרי אני מכיר את השופטים – איננו תמיד שיפוט נבון ביותר.

ברגע הראשון של ההתרגשות רציתי לכתוב אל אוֹילֶנבּוּרג ולהעלות הצעות למקרה שהדבר נכון. במקרה כזה גרמניה צריכה לקדם בשקיקה התיישבות של יהודים בקפריסין. נתקבץ בקפריסין, וביום מן הימים נעבור לארץ־ישראל [במקור: Erez Israel] וניקח אותה בכוח, כשם שלקחו אותה מידינו לפנים.

אבל השינה דחקה את הרעיון הססגוני הזה, ובלילה גמלה בי ההחלטה כי הצעד הנבון ביותר יהיה לא לומר דבר. אם תקבל גרמניה את קפריסין, עוד תהיה לי הזדמנות לנסות את הדבר דרך אוֹילֶנבּוּרג והגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג.
