Eine heutige Depesch Zeitungsdepesche

aus Constantinopel meldet, der

Minister des Aeusseren Tewfik

Pascha habe gesagt, die Türkei

wolle eine Eisenbahn durch Paläs=

tina führen, den Weg nach Indien

bauen.

Das war mein Vorschlag!

Seiten Angriffe. Nordau schreibt

mir aus Paris, dass sich dort

Niemand mehr rührt. Die Maccabaeans

in London sind immer mehr Pick=

Probably the anti-Turkish editorial in the N. Fr. Pr. has caused consternation in Constantinople, too.

Once again I become involved in high politics unexpectedly and without my doing anything toward it.

According to a newspaper despatch from Constantinople of today's date, the Foreign Minister, Tewfik Pasha, has said that Turkey wishes to run a railroad through Palestine and construct a passage to India.

That was my proposal.

I must frankly admit it to myself: I am demoralized.

From no side help, from all sides attacks. Nordau writes me from Paris that nobody stirs there any longer. The Maccabeans in London are more and more Pickwickian,

נראה שגם המאמר הראשי האנטי־טורקי של .N.Fr.Pr עורר תדהמה בקושטא.

ושוב אני נגרר במפתיע אל תוך הפוליטיקה הגבוהה, ובלי שאני מצדי תרמתי לכך.

בהודעת עיתונות טלגרפית מקושטא נמסר ששר החוץ טוּפיק פֶּחָה אמר שטורקיה רוצה להעביר מסילת ברזל דרך ארץ־ישראל, לסלול את הדרך להודו.

זו היתה ההצעה שלי!

עזרה לא באה משום צד, והתקפות — מכל עבר. נורדאו כותב לי מפאריס שזה מכבר אין איש נוקף אצבע שם. "המכבים" בלונדון הופכים "פּיקוויקיים" יותר ויותר,
