„ Liechtenstein oder Schönborn“, sagte ich.

„Oder Gautsch!“

„Der wäre doch wieder nur ein Beamten=

ministerium. Dann könnten Sie schon

gleich dableiben, Excellenz.“

Er sprach über die Wahlen. Nichts Ge=

wisses weiss man nicht. Ueber die Deutsch=

Fortschrittlichen war er am Schlechtesten

zu sprechen. Die machen am meisten

Schwierigkeiten. Ich glaube, er findet

das, weil sie die Schwächsten sind. Die

Christlich=Socialen lobte er, „weil sie wenig=

stens arbeiten wollen“. Auch mit den Czechen

könnte man am Ende auskommen. Diese An=

deutungen zeigten mir, wohin er steuern

will. Er verwahrte sich übrigens dagegen,

dass er den Czechen Zugeständnisse vor

dem Prager Landtag gemacht habe, wie es

die Deutschnationalen entrüstet behaupten.

“I’m just curious about my successor. I can’t wait to see if he’ll do a better job, or what he’ll do. Who are they talking about?”

“Lichtenstein or Schönborn,” I said.

“Or Gautsch!”

“But he would only have a ministry of officials all over again. Then you might as well stay, Your Excellency.”

He spoke about the elections. “Nobody knows nothing certain.” He had the least good to say about the German-Progressives. They are the most troublesome. I believe he thinks so because they are the weakest. He praised the Christian-Socialists, “because at least they are willing to work.” With the Czechs, too, one could manage somehow. These hints showed me in what direction he wants to steer. Incidentally, he denied that he had made concessions to the Czechs prior to the Prague Diet, as the German-Nationalists indignantly assert.

הוא דיבר על הבחירות. אין יודעים שום דבר ברור. על הגרמנים־המתקדמים קבל במיוחד. אלה מערימים קשיים יותר מכל האחרים. דומני שהוא סבור כך משום שהם החלשים ביותר. את הנוצרים־הסוציאלים שיבח, "כי לפחות הם רוצים לעבוד". גם עם הצ׳כים אפשר יהיה להסתדר בסופו של דבר. מן הרמזים הללו הבנתי לאיזה כיוון הוא חותר. בעצם הוא הכחיש שעשה ויתורים לצ׳כים לפני כינוס בית־הנבחרים הפרובינציאלי [של בוֹהֶמיה] בפראג, כפי שטענו בכעס הגרמנים־הלאומיים.
