Brief an Ibrahim

Chère Excellence,

permettez moi de vous annoncer

l’arrivée de cette (xx) machine à écrire

(xx) en types arabes la première de son genre, le modeste cadeau que S[a] M[ajesté] I[mpériale] m’a

fait l’honneur d’accepter.

Je l’envoie avec un employé de la Compagnie

par laquelle j’ai fait construire cette machine.

Pour éviter toute erreur, je me permets

d’ajouter que le porteur n’a droit à aucune

(xx) récompensation. La machine a été

naturellement payée en Amérique et (xx)

The go-between I plan to use for this is Crespi.

Today I am writing Wellisch to suggest to Crespi as his (W.’s) idea that he offer me to mediate between Rouvier and myself.

Letter to Ibrahim:

Your Excellency:

Permit me to inform you of the arrival of that typewriter with Arabic type, the first of its kind, the modest present which H.I.M. has done me the honor of accepting.

I am sending it by an employee of the company by which I had this machine made. In order to avoid any mistake, I permit myself to add that the bearer is not entitled to any compensation. The machine has naturally been paid for in America, and the man who is bringing it in order to explain its use has had his traveling expenses etc. paid by myself.

מכתב [בצרפתית] אל איבּרָהים [בֵּיי]

הוד מעלתך היקר,

הרשה נא לי להודיעך על הגיעה של אותה מכונת כתיבה באותיות ערביות, הראשונה מסוגה, המתנה הצנועה שהוד רוממותו הקיסרית כיבד אותי בנכונותו לקבלה.

שלחתיה עם פקיד של החברה שבאמצעותה ביקשתי לבנות את המכונה הזאת. כדי למנוע טעות אפשרית, אני מרשה לעצמי להוסיף ולומר כי אין השליח זכאי לקבל גמול כלשהו. מובן מאליו שמחיר המכונה שולם באמריקה, ואת הוצאות נסיעתו של האיש המלווה אותה, כדי להסביר כיצד משתמשים בה, שילמתי אני.
