7 Januar [1901] Wien

Heute Vormittag soll ich zum Ministerialrath

Grafen Auersperg gehen. Was wird dabei heraus=

kommen? Die Frage arbeitet in mir seit zwei

Tagen gewaltig. Es kann ebensogut nichts, eine

diceria, wie sehr viel, wie Alles herauskommen.

Ich sage mir jetzt meinen alten Spruch vor:

Rien n’arrive, ni comme on le craint, ni

comme on l’espère.

Dasselbe muss auch für Constantinopel gelten

Yet I’ve done a thing or two on the quiet, for instance in Krain.”

He still has the Emperor’s confidence, as he told me in reply to my question; but his answer no longer sounded as positive as it had last summer.

Then he dismissed me. When I was at the door, he saw me out and said to the doorman: “Call Count Auersperg.”

January 7, Vienna

This morning I am to go to see Ministerialrat Count Auersperg. What will come of it? This question has been agitating me mightily for the past two days. It can just as easily lead to nothing, to a diceria [chat], as to a great deal, to everything.

I am now reciting to myself my old saying: Rien n’arrive, ni comme on le craint, ni comme on l'espère [Nothing happens either as one fears or as one hopes].

The same must apply to Constantinople as well.

עדיין הוא זוכה לאמונו של הקיסר, כך השיב לי על שאלתי, ואולם תשובתו לא היתה נחרצת כשם שהיתה בקיץ שעבר.

אחר־כך פטר אותי. בהיותי בפתח אמר לשומר הסף כשליווה אותי: "קרא אלי את הגראף אַוּאֶרשפֶּרג".

היום לפני הצהריים אני אמור ללכת אל המיניסטֶריאלראט הגראף אַוּאֶרשפֶּרג. מה יצא מזה? כבר יומיים השאלה הזאת מטרידה אותי מאוד.

אפשר שלא יצא מזה ולא כלום, שיחה בטלה, ואפשר הרבה מאוד, הכול. אני חוזר בלבי על המכתם הישן שלי:
