Was soll man mit den Leuten machen?

Er nickte mit bedenklicher Miene.

„Ich habe mich an den Grossherzog

von Baden um Rath gewendet.

Er meint, ich solle durch die östr[eichische]

Regierung den Sultan um eine

Audienz bitten lassen u. ihn

dazu bewegen, dass er die rumä=

nischen Juden einwandern lässt.

Wir können dem Sultan a Geld

dafür anbieten.“ Ich betonte

das „a Göld“ ganz gemüthlich wie=

nerisch und harmlos, wie wenn

es nicht die schwerste Sache wäre,

We can offer the Sultan some money for this.” I said “a Göld”* in the easy-going Viennese dialect and quite off-hand, as though it weren’t the most difficult thing, for which I have been trying in vain for years.

מה לעשות עם האנשים הללו? אם ירשו להם להיכנס, הדבר עלול לעורר מבוכה, כי מצבם נורא. אם תשוב ותסגור את הגבול, והנה אתה ממשלה אנטישמית, והרי דעת הקהל ממילא נוטה לחשוב כך, אחרי שוויתרת ללוּאֶגֶר בעניין תיקון חוק הבחירות של וינה".

הוא הנהן והבעת פניו היתה דאוגה.

"לגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג מבּאדֶן בבקשת עצה. הוא סבור שעלי לבקש באמצעות ממשלת אוסטריה ריאיון אצל הסולטאן ולדבר על לבו שיניח ליהודים הרומנים להיכנס. נוכל להציע לסולטאן מעות בתמורה״. את הביטוי ״a Göld״ [מעות, בעגה וינאית] הגיתי בנינוחות וינאית תמימה, כאילו לא זה העניין הקשה ביותר שאני טורח בו לשווא זה שנים.
