Mahmud Nedim sprach auch auf eine

komische Weise (xx) von unseren Religionen.

„Die Moslims“, sagte er, „stehen den

Juden näher als den Christen. Wer

Moses oder Abraham beleidigt,

dem wird bei uns der Hals ab=

geschnitten. Auch sind wir wie

Sie beschnitten. Sie könnten sich

für einen Mohamedaner, ich

für einen Juden ausgeben. Christus

erkennen wir nicht als Gottes

Sohn an, wenigstens nicht mehr

als einen Anderen. Für uns

sind das lauter Propheten.“

Der junge de Haas in London scheint

Mahmud Nedim also spoke in a funny way of our religions. “The Moslems,” he said, “are closer to the Jews than to the Christians. Among us anyone who makes an insulting remark about Moses or Abraham has his head cut off. Also, we are circumcized, like yourselves. You could pass for a Mohammedan, I, for a Jew. Christ we don’t recognize as the son of God, at least not any more than anyone else. To us, all these are prophets.”

Young de Haas in London seems to be doing an effective job, to judge from his letters.

מחמוּד נֶדים גם דיבר באורח מצחיק על הדתות שלנו: "המוסלמים", אמר, "קרובים יותר ליהודים מן הנוצרים. מי שעולב במשה או באברהם, אצלנו עורפים את ראשו. אנו גם נימולים כמוכם. אתה יכול להציג את עצמך כמוסלמי, אני כיהודי. אין אנו מכירים בישו כבן האלוהים, בוודאי לא יותר מכל אדם אחר. לנו כל אלה הם נביאים".
