fünf Uhr ab zu Hause zu sein.

Da hakte ein Zwischenfall ein, der mich

gestern Nachmittags ziemlich nervös machte.

Mittags liess Fürst Eulenburg in die „Welt“ tele=

phoniren, er wünsche mich um 6 Uhr zu

sprechen. Ich konnte nicht Nein sagen, da

ja auch das Rendezvous Auersperg=Schöller

nicht bestimmt für den Abend war.

Ich traf also etwas complicirte Disposi=

tionen für den Fall, dass in meiner Ab=

wesenheit vom Hause etwas von Auersperg käme u. fuhr um sechs zu

Eulenburg.

Dieser machte mir eine überraschende Mit=

theilung. Er habe sich über die Provenienz

der Denunciationsnote in der „Information“

des Lumpen Graf informirt u. erfahren,

dass diese Note „auf eine Differenz des

Dr. Herzl mit dem Secretär Dr. Landau “

zurückzuführen sei.

Ich klärte ihn über den Charakter des

sauberen S[aul] R[afael] (xx) Landau auf u. beruhigte

ihn darüber, dass von „Enthüllungen“ dieses

Burschen nichts zu befürchten sei, einfach

weil ich ihn nie in etwas eingeweiht

Then an incident intervened which made me rather nervous yesterday afternoon. At noon there was a call from Prince Eulenburg to the office of the Welt saying that he wanted to speak with me at six o’clock. I couldn’t say no because, after all, the meeting between Auersperg and Schöller had not been definitely set for the evening.

Accordingly I made rather complicated arrangements in case something came from Auersperg during my absence from the house, and at six o’clock I drove to Eulenburg.

He gave me some surprising information. He had made inquiries about the provenance of that scoundrel Graf and had learned that this item was traceable “to a difference of opinion between Dr. Herzl and the secretary Dr. Landau.”

I set him straight on the character of the fine S. R. Landau and reassured him that nothing need be feared from “exposures” on the part of this fellow, simply because I had never confided anything to him.

והנה אירע משהו שעצבן אותי לא־מעט אתמול אחר־הצהריים. בצהריים היה טלפון מאוֹילֶנבּוּרג אל Die Welt, הוא מבקש לדבר אתי בשש. לא יכולתי לומר לא, שהרי הפגישה עם אַוּאֶרשפֶּרג ועם שֶלֶר לא נקבעה סופית לערב זה.

עשיתי אפוא סידורים מורכבים למדי למקרה שבעת היעדרי מן הבית יגיע דבר־מה מאַוּאֶרשפֶּרג, ובשש נסעתי אל אוֹילֶנבּוּרג.

זה הודיע לי הודעה מפתיעה. הוא ביקש להיוודע מה מקור דברי הבלע ב־Information של הנבל גראף, ונודע לו שיש לייחס את הידיעה ל״חילוקי דעות שיש לד״ר הרצל עם המזכיר ד״ר לַנדאו".

הארתי את עיניו על אופיו של שאול רפאל לַנדאו הטהור והרגעתי אותו באומרי שאין לחשוש מ״גילויים" של הברנש הזה, פשוט משום שמעולם לא שיתפתי אותו בדבר כלשהו.
