Ich erwiderte: „In diesem Falle wäre es viel=

tion schicken, bevor er sie veröffentliche.

Dann würde ich die beiden Bursche zu mir

rufen, sie nach dem seinerzeitigen Rathe

When the person involved made me the disclosure, I naturally didn’t let him see any reaction. For it would be sad if I didn’t have myself under control to that extent. I am used to being faced suddenly with the strangest things. I replied: “In that case it might be advisable for you to tell the blackmailer that I am afraid of him. He should send me the galley proofs of the next publication before it appears. Then I would call those two characters to my place, let them commit the crime of extortion, as the Chief of Police advised some time ago, and then have them arrested."

כשמסר לי הלה את הדברים, נמנעתי מתגובה. זה הרי היה עצוב אילולא יכולתי לשלוט בעצמי עד כדי כך. אני רגיל שדברים משונים ביותר באים אל פתחי. ואשר לעניין עצמו, הודעתי לרייכסקאנצלר את תוכנה המדויק של שיחתי אתך, ולא ייעשה דבר שיסייע לדיון על הידיעה שפרסמו שניים אלה ולהפצתה. לפי שעה, דומני, נשאיר את הדבר כך. והיה אם ימשיכו בזה כפי שאמרו, אודיע לך ולא אעשה דבר בלי שאדבר אתך תחילה".

עניתי: "אם כך, אולי כדאי שתודיע לסחטן שאני חושש מפניו. רצוי שישלח לי את דף ההגהה של הידיעה לפני שיפרסם אותה, ואז אקרא אלי את שני הברנשים, אניח להם לעשות את מעשה הסחיטה, כפי שיעץ לי בזמנו ראש המשטרה, ואחר־כך אדאג שיעצרו אותם".
