Dennoch trau' ich dem

Ich glaube, die Angriffe

der Antisemiten hat Bene=

dikt nur vorgeschützt, weil

er sich vor meiner durch

die Welt zu erlangenden

Selbstständigkeit fürchtet.

Gestern mit Széchényi (xx) Pascha

u seiner Frau soupirt.

Sie, eine Levantinerin, ver=

kehrt intim mit der Schwester

des Sultans.

Ich gewann ihn u. sie für

meine Sache, liess durchschim

Der Gedanke war ihm sympathisch.

The effect: an enchanting smile from Benedikt when I came into his room. He was amiability personified, insisted that I have dinner with him, and didn’t say another word about the Welt.

Still, I’m on my guard.

I think Benedikt only used the attacks of the anti-Semites as a pretext, because he is afraid of the independence which I am to gain through the Welt.

Had supper yesterday with Széchényi Pasha and his wife.

She, a Levantine, is on intimate terms with the Sultan’s sister. I won him and her over to my cause, let it peep out that Széchényi could make some money on it. He liked the idea of it,

אתמול סעדתי עם סֶצֶ׳ני פֶּחָה ועם אשתו. היא לבנטינית, מבאי ביתה של אחות הסולטאן. רכשתי אותו וגם אותה לעניין שלי, אף הגנבתי רמז שסֶצֶ׳ני יכול להרוויח מזה משהו. הרעיון נשא חן בעיניו.
